Violations of Neutrality
  • British French tried to stop the U.S. from
    helping the other country while they were at war
    in 1803.
  • British stopped U.S. ships to search for British
    sailors that deserted their navy.
  • Sometimes they took American sailors by
    accident.

  • Impressment The act of forcing someone to serve
    in the army or navy.
  • British battleship stopped the U.S.S. Chesapeake
    and took sailors by force
  • Americans were stunned! Something must be done!

Americans Respond!
  • Embargo Act - Bans trade with ALL foreign
    countries. Meant to punish Britain France and
    show them we are serious.
  • American merchants lose their two main markets
    and big money. People are upset with Jefferson
    and begin to smuggle goods. Britain and France
    are hardly effected.

  • Jefferson passes the Non-Intercourse Act.
  • Banned trade with England France only.
  • U.S. promised to start trading again with the
    first country that stopped violating U.S. Ships.

  • The British and Indians are upset with U.S.
    settlers for taking lands in the West.
  • To help stop the U.S. from seizing western lands,
    the British arm the Indians and show support for
    Tecumsehs unification plan.

  • Tecumseh Shawnee Chief a great leader of
    Indians. He hoped to unite the Indian Tribes
    from the Northwest, South, and Mississippi Valley
    to stop U.S. settlers.

  • Tecumseh made village in Indiana Territory near
    Tippecanoe / Wabash rivers.
  • Gov. William Henry Harrison warned Tecumseh not
    to fight / resist the U.S. get out!
  • Harrison attacked Indian village in 1811.

  • Trade restrictions hurt the industrial New
    England economy. Federalists just want to get
    things back to normal.
  • The U.S. is not prepared to fight another war!

  • War Hawks Congressmen and citizens who wanted
    to declare war against Britain because
  • British supplied Indians with guns out west
  • British have interfered with U.S. trade and
    commerce (including impressment)
  • We want to invade Canada and claim more land for
    the U.S.
