Traits and Inheritance 4.2
2
  • Gene- instructions for inherited traits. (like a
    recipe)
  • Allele- different versions of the same gene.

3
  • Phenotype- how the trait is seen. For example the
    purple flower.
  • Genotype- how the genes are written. The genotype
for a purple flower would be Pp or PP.
  • Homozygous-the genes are the same PP or pp
  • Heterozygous-the genes are different Pp

4
  • Punnett Square- an organizer that helps display
    the combinations of offspring characteristics
    from the parents information.

5
  • Probability- the mathmatical chance of something
    happening.
  • Incomplete dominance- when multiple alleles play
a role in the phenotype. For example a red flower
crossing with a white flower creating a pink
flower. Both colors played a part in the outcome.
  • Some gene influences more than one trait. For
example the gene that influences the tigers fur
to be white it also influences the eyes to be
    blue.

6
  • Some traits are a result of multiple genes
working together. For example eye color is a
result of 2 or more genes, that is why eye color
    varies greatly.
  • Environment can also play a role in the outcome.
For example a person may have the genetics to be
tall but a poor diet will not allow a person to
    grow as tall.
