3 CESNET, z.s.p.o. CESNET
(Czech Educational and Scientific Network)
- NREN in the Czech Republic
Established as legal entitie not for profit
Association of Legal Entities (z.s.p.o.) in 1996
- 27 Universities
- Czech Academy of Sciences 51 staff members in
Prague More than 150 part-time universities and
Academy of Sciences staff working on projects
4 Funding - Research
plan Optical High Speed National Research
Network and its New Applications - 2004 2010
- Funded by Ministry of Education, Youth and
Sports of the Czech republic and association
members budged cca 12 Mil
EURo/year Research activity annual
report available

5 Main strategic areas of research plan (1)
Network infrastructure
- Optical networks -
IP infrastructure - IPv6
- PC routers, programmable
hardware
6Main strategic areas of research plan (2)
Network Environment and Services -
monitoring of infrastructure and network
operation - monitoring of performance
characteristics of network and their
optimalization - authentication and
authorization infrastructure (PKI) - support
infrastructure for multimedia application
7Main strategic areas of research plan (3)
Applications - GRIDs
united framework for co-operation - support of
distant co-operation - scanning and
videotransfer of high quality, 3D, space
sound - work with multimedia content -
support of distance education, medical
applications
8 Customer (User) Empowered Fibre (CEF) networks
general concept
- CEF networks are emerging phenomenon, that
gradually changes network architecture, topology
and services from bottom of hierarchy to top - Very important advantage is independence on
carriers - Getting fibre means controlling the network
- Cost effective in comparison to clasical approach
in most of the cases - What about in GN2 ?
9 Fibres in CESNET strategy -
CESNET started lease fibres since 1999 -
national fibre footprint contracted for 1 5
year (fibre lease) - all CESNETs
services based on dark fibre use from
middle 2004 - start of DWDM implementation
during 2004
10 Customer (User) Empowered Networks
Is Broader Phenomen - e.g. installation
of Wi-Fi Networks by user communities - install
and operate computer networks is due to
deployment of Ethernet technology in WAN area
much easier now
11 - Fibre to the Homes initiatives in many
countries (e.g. Japan) - possibility for
using EC structural funds for laying the
cables - more information www.mpo.cz

13Access to dark fiber
1996 -
liberalization of the leased line provisioning
- very positive role of the European
Comission - strong lobbying required
14 1996
- call for tender for TEN-34 CZ
(34 Mbps national infrastructure)
Two offers 1)
Czech Telecom - optical infrastructure
available - price unrealistic
- monopoly behavior 2) Czech Radiokomunikace
- 34 Mbps microwave links -
not proven technical solution -
realistic price - co-operative approach
15 1996 1998 -
several alternative providers (power, oil, gass
distribution companies, railways, etc.) built
fiber optic infrastructure - everyone start
with infrastructure between major cities -
everyone want to sell services (bandwidth) only
16 1999
Telecom market situation in CZ
- offer much higher than demand
Convinced one company (MERO) lease dark fiber
between Praha Brno for pilot project.
17Prague-Brno circuit capacity 2,5 Gbps
18 2000
January 2,5 Gbps pilot IP service operational
Partner (MERO)
received - payment (covering cost)
- results of the pilot project (joined technical
team) - extensive publicity in all types
of media
19 Nothing in Line (NIL) Concept -
no devices along optical path - devices
only at the end of data curcuits - no need
for complex negotiations about housing and
operation (e.g. Access to premises)
20 Last (First Mile Issue) -
concept of meeting point - joined
investment of fiber provider, CESNET and
local organization to fiber between meeting
point and CESNET PoP location
21 CESNET2 Network Topology in February 2004
22 GLIF Global Lambda Intergrated
Facility (www.glif.is) GLIF
environment for co-operation (networking
infrastructure, network engineering,
system integration, middleware,
applications) GLIF established by invited
participants at the 3rd Global Lambda
Grid Workshop, held August 27, 2003 in
Reykjavik, Island
