Title: TECHNOLOGY BAZAAR

1
TECHNOLOGY BAZAAR
  • Objective
  • Participants get to know about a range of useful
    low-cost smallholder technologies

Some examples in pictures
2
  • Treadle pump 1
  • New development, whose cost are expected to be
    around Rs. 1000 (USD 22)
  • It lifts water from 25 ft depth. It can be used
to feed sprinkler or to fill tanks for drip
    irrigation
  • Some African treadle pumps cost 75 USD!

3
  • Malawi pump
  • Is produced in India for export to Malawi. Wooden
    pedals are added locally.
  • Cost approx. 30 USD (packed in corrugated card
board boxes including spare parts and transport
    to Mumbai).
  • They have exported around 30000 pumps in 2
    years.
  • Why is it not manufactured in Malawi? They do
not have an adequate metal industry.

4
  • Concrete treadle pump
  • Has been developed for saline areas where metal
treadle pump get corroded very quickly.
  • It has a PVC sleeve to reduce friction in washer
    movement.
  • Its disadvantage is its weight of around 30 kg,
which makes it cumbersome to move it around.
Hoever, farmers who depend on it for their
livelihoods even employ labour to move it.
  • Its cost are around 20 USD.

5
  • Treadle pump for surface water sources
  • There are treadle pumps for tubewell sources and
for open water surfaces (like ponds, open wells)
  • There are different cylinder diameters (e.g. 5
inches for water level at 10 ft, 3.5 inches for
    water level at 25 ft)
  • Its cost are around 20 USD.
