Title: Start of a Revolution

Start of a Revolution
2
Loyalist
  • This is someone who is going to be loyal to the
English Crown. They believe in staying with the
    protection of the mother country
  • Famous Loyalists
  • King George III ruler of the British Empire,
and believes that after supporting the American
colonies for over 100 years with protection and
trade, the colonists should be happy with England
  • John Connolly Virginian loyalist who attempts
to unite the Indians and Virginians against any
    rebellion against English Rule

3
Patriot
  • A Patriot is someone who believes that the laws
Parliament has set forth are wrong. Taxation
    without Representation within Parliament is
    unfair to the colonies
  • Famous Patriots
  • Thomas Paine - wrote Common Sense, a pamphlet
that attempts to sway opinions among the
colonists that it is time to unite and become
    independent from England.
  • Samuel Adams Sons of Liberty Led a group of
Bostonians to fight British troops in Boston
leading to the Boston Massacre. Then put those
troops on trial for the massacre. Sent gangs of
men to beat up British tax collectors.

The Colonies Unite!
5
Loyalist or Patriot?
Many of the colonists werent sure how to react
to the taxation policies. Some were
self-determined and wanted more voice in the
government.
Should they be loyal to the king (Loyalist), or
should they support an independence movement
(Patriot)?
6
The Patriots Unite
In 1775 delegates from the colonies met in
Philadelphia to discuss the situation.
Their meeting was called The First Continental
Congress.
7
First Continental Congress
  • They voted to
  • ban all trade with Britain until the Intolerable
    Acts were repealed
  • create colonial militias
  • to meet again in seven months.

8
Colonial Militias
The Patriots were prepared and ready to fight at
a moments notice.
They were called the Minutemen.
9
The Voice of a Patriot
Patrick Henry urged the colonists to unite.
I know not what course others may take. But as
for me, give me liberty or give me death!
10
Arguments of Loyalists and Patriots
Loyalist Britain is our mother country. She
protects us and our trade.
Patriot The colonies have flourished (grown),
and we dont need a mother any more. We would be
better off if we made our own decisions.
11
Arguments of Loyalists and Patriots
Loyalist The colonists would lose a possible
war and are greatly outnumbered.
Patriot We are determined to fight for our
rights. Its only common sense that we should
form a new country.
