Stanza
  • Stanza A formal division of lines in a poem,
    considered as a unit. Stanzas are separated by
    spaces (imagine a paragraph)
  • Quatrain A stanza or poem made up of four
    lines, usually with a definite rhythm and rhyme
    scheme

Rhyme - Repetition of sounds (vowel and
consonant) at the ends of words
  • Exact rhyme repetition of words that end with
    the same vowel and consonant sounds- love and
    dove
  • Slant rhyme repetition of words that end with
    similar sounds but do not rhyme perfectly- prove
    and glove
  • Internal rhyme- rhyming words within a line

Rhyme Scheme
  • A regular pattern of rhyming words in a poem.
    The rhyme scheme is shown by using different
    letters of the alphabet for each new rhyme. In
    an aabb stanza, for example, line 1 rhymes with
    line 2 and line 3 rhymes with line 4.

  • That floats on high oer vales and hills, b
  • When all at once I saw a crowd, a
  • A host, of golden daffodils, b
  • Beside the lake, beneath the trees, c

  • End rhyme Rhyme at the ends of lines

Couplet
  • Couplet A couplet is pair of rhyming lines,
    usually of the same length and meter.
  • Ex
  • For thy sweet love rememberd such wealth brings
  • That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

Meter
  • The meter of a poem is its rhythmical pattern.
    This pattern is determined by the number and
    types of stresses, or beats, in each line.
  • Ex. Iambic Pentameter
  • Shall I compare thee to a summers day.

Lyric Poem
  • A lyric poem expresses the observations and
    feelings of a single speaker.
  • Below are some popular lyric forms
  • Haiku, Limerick and Sonnet

Free Verse
  • Free Verse Poetry not written in a regular
    rhythmical pattern, or meter. Free verse tries
    to capture the rhythms of speech.

Narrative Poem
  • A narrative poem tells a story. It can be
    humorous or serious.
