Population Pyramids
2
There are generally three types of population
pyramids created from age-sex distributions--expan
sive, stationary and constrictive. Examples of
these three types of population pyramids appear
at the end of this report. Definitions of the
three types follow
3
1. EXPANSIVE population pyramids show larger
numbers or percentages of the population in the
younger age groups, usually with each age group
smaller in size or proportion than the one born
before it. These types of pyramids are usually
found in populations with very large fertility
rates and lower than average life expectancies.
.
EXPANSIVE
4
2.STATIONARY or near-stationary population
pyramids display some what equal numbers or
percentages for almost all age groups. Of course,
smaller figures are still to be expected at the
oldest age groups. The age-sex distributions of
some European countries, especially Scandinavian
ones, will tend to fall into this category.
5
3. CONSTRICTIVE population pyramids display lower
numbers or percentages of younger people.

World Population Target
World Population Target
In demographics and ecology, Population growth
rate (PGR) is the fractional rate at which the
number of individuals in a population increases.
Specifically, PGR ordinarily refers to the change
in population over a unit time period, often
expressed as a percentage of the number of
individuals in the population at the beginning of
that period. This can be written as the formula
8
Population pyramids are used to show information
about the age and gender of people in a specific
country.
In this country the highest Birth Rate Is 0-4
Male
Female
Where is the highest birth rate?
What about the death rate? Is it high or low?
There is also a high Death Rate.
Population in millions
This population pyramid is typical of countries
in poorer parts of the world (LEDCs.)
9
Why did age 5-9 go down drastically, then go back
up?
10
In some LEDCs the government is encouraging
couples to have smaller families. This means the
birth rate has fallen.

Population in millions
In the future the elderly people will make up the
largest section of the population in this country.
In this country the birth rate is decreasing.
This is happening more and more in many of the
worlds richer countries.
13
Male

Population in thousands
This country has a large number of temporary
workers. These are people who migrate here
especially to find a job.

  • Your task
  • Open your own PowerPoint presentation.
  • Go to www.census.gov www.census.gov
  • Select Search and type in IDB.
  • Select International Database
  • From here select Population Pyramids.
  • Find a population pyramid typical of a poor
country (LEDC) copy and paste it into your
PowerPoint document then add labels to explain
    what is shown.
  • Repeat for an MEDC (rich) country.
  • For a country of your choice copy and paste the
    pyramids for 2000, 2025 and 2050.
  • Write about what the graphs show and try to give
reasons for the patterns. Explain how the
population of this country is changing and say
how that could affect the country.

When you have finished Find out some background
information on each country and add this to your
presentation. Concentrate on facts and figures
which you can use to compare the countries such
as of the children at school, type of jobs
available, how rich or poor (GDP per capita.)
