Title: How do we apply educational theory in practice?

1
How do we apply educational theory in practice?
2
Combination of learning theories into a
comprehensive framework
  • Two basic processes in learning
  • External interaction between the learner and
his/her social, cultural or material environment
  • Internal psychological process of acquisition and
    elaboration
  • Illeris,K (2003)

The 4 levels of learning
  • Cumulative or mechanical learning
  • Assimilative or learning by addition
  • Accomodative or transcendent learning
  • Transformative or expansive learning

6
Seven principles to guide teaching practice
  • Learner actively contributes.
  • Learning is related to real-life problems
  • Learners current knowledge and experience are
    taken into account
  • Self-directed learning is supported
  • Opportunities for practice, self-assessment and
    feedback are given
  • Opportunities to self-reflect on practice
  • Teachers role model educational principles
  • Kaufman, DM (2003)

7
Case Studies
  • The following are three case studies portraying
actual situations, which are encountered in
    medical education.
  • Please use the learning theories and educational
principles described earlier, to solve the
    problems in those three cases.

8
Case 1 Teaching basic science
  • You have been asked to give a lecture on the
autonomic nervous system to the first year dental
student class of 100 students. This has
traditionally been a difficult subject for the
class. How will you plan your lesson so that the
students can understand this topic in a 50-minute
    lecture?

9
Case 2 Cultural competence education
  • You are a member of the Curriculum Committee in
the Department of Pediatrics, who has been given
    the responsibility of integrating cultural
competence into the third year pediatrics
clerkship. You have been given four two-hour
blocks over the 6-weeks. How would you make the
material engaging and useful to the students?

10
Case 3 Resident training
  • You are the preceptor of a first-year resident,
who is rotating in your practice for 3 months.
Your practice is busy, so that the time you can
spend with him is limited. How will you plan so
that your resident has a valuable learning
    experience?
