Goal

• The goal of the Apollo 13 mission was to land on
  the Moon.

Crew

• James A. Lovell- Commander
• John L. Swigert- CM Pilot
• Fred W. Haise- LM Pilot

Ken Mattingly

• Ken Mattingly was the original LM Pilot, but he
  was replaced by Fred Haise 3 days before the
  launch, after being exposed to German measles.

Launch

• The mission was launched on April 11, 1970 at
  113pm.

• Two days into the flight, the astronauts aboard
  the spacecraft heard a loud crashing sound which
  caused fluctuations in the electrical power.

• The astronauts initially thought they had been
  hit by an meteoroid, but later discovered that
  one of their two oxygen tanks had exploded.

• They eventually decided that a moon landing would
  be unsafe and that the best plan would be to get
  the astronauts back home.

• One major problem was that there was too much
  carbon dioxide in the space craft.
• The engineers eventually figured out a way to get
  the lithium hydroxide (capable of removing
  carbon dioxide) from the Command Module to the
  Lunar Module

• Another problem was that there was not enough
  energy to power up the space craft after the
  shutting down the command module.
• Engineers on Earth developed a new protocol to
  save enough energy aboard the spacecraft.

• The spacecraft finally landed in the Pacific
  Ocean on April 17, 1970.
