The Atom

• An atom is the smallest unit of an element that
  still demonstrates the physical and chemical
  properties of that element.

Structure of an Atom

• An atom has a central nucleus surrounded by an
  electron cloud.

Subatomic Particles

• Within the nucleus
• Protons with a positive charge
• Neutrons that have no charge (neutral)
• (These particles have approximately equal mass
  which is much greater than that for an electron)
• Outside the nucleus
• Electrons with a negative charge found in
  electron clouds around the nucleus

Atom Mass and Volume

• The bulk of the mass if an atom is concentrated
  in the nucleus where the protons and neutrons are
  found. The electrons outside of it are very
  small and their mass is negligible.
• The bulk of the volume of an atom is empty space
  found in between the electrons surrounding the
  nucleus.
