Title: Whiskey Rebellion
1Whiskey Rebellion
Americas first Response
2In the days before canals and railroads, western
farmers did not ship their grain east of the
Appalachian Mountains because it was so
expensive. Also the possibility of the grain
rotting was possible.
3The Appalachian Mountains posed what problem to
trade ?
4Farmers had a hard time keeping corn from rotting
before it got to market and travel was slow and
difficult crossing the Appalachian Mtns.
5The Appalachian Mountains were difficult to pass
especially during winter either too muddy or too
covered with snow
6Partly as a result of this what did farmers do
with their corn?
Distilled it into whiskey
7America is in debt. What is Alexander Hamilton
going to do to raise money to solve this crisis?
What would you do?
8To raise more money to help pay offs war debts
Alexander Hamiltondoes this?
9Why are farmers mad at the Whiskey Tax?
- Farmers bartered and rarely had money
- They thought they were being singled out
- In the back country , west of the Appalachian
Mtns. they didnt like direct government
intervention. They didnt feel like they had a
voice in what was taxed and what wasnt
10The farmers revolt!
- Mob attacks tax collectors with pitchforks,
- guns and swords
11What was Washingtons response?
12Washington escorts 15,000 troopsto confront
disgruntled farmers
13What message did Washington send by using troops?
- The constitution provides a peaceful way to
change any law. - Individuals can not be selective in which laws
they choose to follow - The government will put down any violent forms of
rebellion
14What made this protest against taxes different
than the one against the British?
- They had a say this time in who made up the laws
15Is violence ever justified as a form of protest?
- Does justification only rest in the hands of the
victors? - To what ends (how much violence) is a country
justified using in putting down a rebellion?
