What is a Civic Duty?
  • Civic duties are the musts of citizenship.
    This means that all U.S. citizens are required by
    law to perform these actions.

Civic Duties
  • 1 Obeying the law Our country only works if
    everyone obeys the laws!
  • 2 Attending School All U.S. citizens must go to
    school so that citizens have the skills necessary
    to get jobs.
  • 3. Paying Taxes All citizens must pay taxes
    because it gives our government money to do
    things like pave roads, pay for police, public
    housing, schools, etc.

  • 4. Serving in the Armed Forces We have a duty
    to protect our country.
  • 5. Appearing in Court If you are called to
    serve jury duty or to testify as a witness, you
    must do so.

Civic Responsibilities
  • Civic responsibilities are the shoulds of
    American citizens. Though you are not required
    by law to do them, most Americans recognize their
    importance.

  • 1 Voting One of the most important rights of
    U.S. citizensthey get to choose who our leaders
    will be.
  • 2 Being Informed To make a good decision when
    voting and to be involved in government, it is
    important to know about current events.
  • 3. Taking Part in Government Citizens should
    be involved, whether they are a member of
    government or voting for it.

  • 4. Helping Your Community Important to take
    pride in your community and get involved to
    improve it!
  • 5. Respecting and Protecting Others Rights You
    should know what rights you have and must defend
    human rights.

What is the difference between a duty and a
responsibility?
  • Duties MUST be done and are required by law.
  • Responsibilities SHOULD be done and are not
    required by law, but are important.

What can you do to get involved??
  • 1. Speak out! You can write letters to members of
    government letting them know what bothers you!
  • 2. Get involved in your community! Help in your
    community and work to improve it.
  • 3. Organize petitions and campaigns to accomplish
    what you want!
