Must be 18 to get one! (after 1 year of
unsupervised driving) Have 60 days of moving
into NJ to apply for one Those under 21 have a
different appearing license than those above

Graduated Driver Licenses (GDL)
  • -Multi stage licensing system.
  • Introduces young drivers to the road gradually.
  • Fines are 100 for violations

3 Types of Permits
  • A Learners Permit Age 16 (The Early Bird
    Road)
  • B Exam Permit Age 17 (The Young Adult Road)
  • Learners and Exam permit Driver must have
    for 6 months (excluding suspensions)
  • Cannot drive between 11 pm and 5am
  • C Adult Permit Age 21
  • Adult Permit Driver must have for 3 months
    and has no time restrictions

  • Must practice supervised driving for 6 months
    excluding suspensions before you can attempt to
    take road test.
  • Supervised driver must be licensed in the state
    of New Jersey, have their license for 3 years
    and be 21 years old or older
  • After 1 year with probationary license, you may
    get your Basic License (must be 18 years old)

  • No cell phones or electronic devices (AT ALL)
  • Must wear seat belts
  • Passengers are limited to dependants of the
    permit holder and parent or guardian and one
    additional person,
  • If a permit driver commits a traffic offense,
    responsibility is on both the student, and
    instructor.
  • You can get them if not in suspension status

Graduated Driver License Program Adult Permit
  • Must be 21
  • Must practice with supervising driver for 3
    months
  • Must practice unsupervised for 1 year
    (probationary license).
  • No time restrictions or passenger restrictions

  • Must be at least 17 years old to get this!!!
  • Must have completed 6 months with a permit

GDL Decals Kyleighs Law
  • All Graduated Drivers under 21 with a permit or
    probationary license must display a red decal on
    their front and rear license plates.
  • Cost is 4 for these decals

Examination permits for out of State Drivers
  • Must purchase within 60 days of moving to New
    Jersey
  • Non-residents under 18 are subject to GDL
    requirements, even if in possession of a valid
    out of state license.
