Title: 5.1 Analyzing the Wheel of Theodorus

1
5.1 Analyzing the Wheel of Theodorus
  • Jennifer Birmingham
  • Kristy Mann
  • Kristy Nix
  • Betty Trayvick

2
Problem of the Day
  • In your own words, describe the math you see in
    the seashell.

3
The Wheel of Theodorus
  • The Wheel of Theodorus is named for its creator,
    Theodorus of Cyrene.
  • Theodorus was a Pythagorean and one of Platos
    teachers.
  • It begins with a triangle with legs of length 1
    and winds around counterclockwise.
  • Each triangle is drawn using the hypotenuse of
the previous triangle as one leg and a segment of
length 1 as the other leg.

4
Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of
each hypotenuse in the Wheel of Theodorus on
Labsheet 5.1. Label each hypotenuse with its
length. Use the square root symbol to express
lengths that are not whole numbers.
5
Cut out the ruler from Labsheet 5.1. Measure
each hypotenuse on the Wheel of Theodorus, and
label the point on the ruler that represents its
length.
6
Use your calculator to find the value of each
square root, and compare the result to the
approximations you found.
7
When Bob used his calculator to find v3, he got
1.732050808. Kim says that Bobs answer must be
wrong because when she multiplies 1.732050808 by
1.732050808, she gets 3.000000001. Why do these
students disagree?
