1Perspectives and forseen problems in the SMN-CNA
involvement in NAME

Meteorológico Nacional Subdirección General
Técnica COMISIÓN NACIONAL DEL AGUA
Sesión especial del NAME Congreso de la Unión
Geofísica Mexicana Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco 6-7

2Status of Automatic Weather Stations
- 74 AWSs working with near real time availability
of data on the Internet - Highly probable that for the NAME the number will
climb to 84 - Measurements (averages or accumulations) at 10
minute intervals - GOES telemetry every 3 hours
- Publication on Internet time lag between 15 and
75 minutes, depending on the actual time of
transmission
3Where are the SMN AWSs?
(Among the 10 new ones, only Hermosillo is in NW
México)
4Available variables on SMN AWSs

14What other AWSs could be available?25 AWSs
operated by SEMAR (mexican military Navy)
(only 22 on this map) (other 39 non-telemetric)
(telemetry through the Solidaridad satellite)
15What other AWSs could be available?10 AWSs
operated by GASIR-CNA (Surface Hydrology River
Engineering)
(GOES telemetry)
16What other AWSs could be available?44 AWSs
operated by CILA (International Boundary and
Water Commission-Mexican side)
(GOES telemetry)
17What other AWSs could be available?Several
agromet networks (for example 2 in the state of
Sonora)
7 Agro-AWSs near Hermosillo
(usually short range telemetric)
10 Agro-AWSs near Caborca
14.7 km
16.4 km
18Meteorological Observatories
- 83 surface synoptic stations
- Nominally measurements every hour, transmission
every 3 hours (8/day) - Pen and paper recording instruments
- Reality
- Staff of 7 required for full operation
- On average staffed by 4.3 observers
- Down from 5.1 a few months ago
- Can still go down from now to summer-2004
- Data available in near real time from WMO-GTS
(for example WAFS station)
