Title: Chemistry!

1
Chemistry!
  • The study of the composition, structure,
properties, and reactions of a substance.

2
Matter
3
States of matter
  • Solid

The structure and the volume are defined.
Particules have energy to vibrate. Strong
attraction between atomes.
4
States of matter
  • Liquid

The volume is defined but the structure is not.
Particules can move slightly but the force of
attraction is still great
5
States of matter
  • Gas

The volume and the structure are not defined
Particules have enough energy to counterbalance
the force of attraction so they can move
independantly.
6
Physical properties
  • Physical properties can be observed without
    changing the type of matter.
  • Examples of physical properties include
  • Texture -- Shape
  • Size -- Color
  • Odor -- Volume
  • Mass -- Weight
  • density --boiling point

7
Chemical properties
  • Chemical properties describe how a substance
    changes into a new substance.
  • Ex
  • ability to burn
  • ability to react with another substance

8
Physical changes
  • When objects undergo a change that does not
    change their chemical nature.
  • Theoretically reversible.
  • Ex Making a baseball bat. Wood is crafted into a
shape. The physical properties have changed but
the chemical nature of the wood has not been
    altered.

9
Chemical changes
  • When substances become new or different
    substances.
  • Ex Fireworks are actually metals such as
magnesium and copper that change chemically as
they light up the night skies with their
    fantastic colors.
  • To identify a chemical change look for observable
signs such as color change, bubbling and fizzing,
light production, smoke, and presence of heat.
