Distribution of Material
  • The distribution of materials can be either
    heterogeneous or homogeneous.

5
Types of mixtures
  • Mixtures can be classified into five types
  • 1 Mechanical Mixture occurs when the particles
of matter are not uniformly scattered.
  • Examples relish, concrete, sand, salads

6
  • 2 Suspension have larger particles and are
    heterogeneous. Most mixtures are suspension
    mixtures.
  • Examples Dust in air, oil and water

7
  • 3 Solution solutions are homogeneous mixtures
that consist of microscopic particles. The
solute and the solvent in a solution are either
    both polar or non-polar molecules.
  • Examples sugar water, salt water, fizzy drinks

8
  • 4 Colloidal these mixtures fall between
suspension and solution mixtures. These mixtures
have properties of both solids and liquids. The
substances within the mixture are smaller and
    homogeneous.
  • Examples whipped cream (a gas and a liquid)
    paints, glue, butter and milk.

9
  • 5 Alloys are homogeneous mixtures that contain
    one or more metals.
  • Examples stainless steel, sterling silver

10
Questions
  • 1. Define solute and solvent. Pg 170
  • 2. Identify the following as one of the types of
    mixtures. Include an explanation why.
  • Raisin Bran cereal, paint thinner, paint,
shaving cream, oil and vinegar salad dressing,
    14K gold
  • 3.Your teacher has given you 2 shaken test tubes,
one with milk and one with chalk and water. How
do you decide which is which? Explain.
