    exchange for protection by knight (a vassal)

    (nobles or bishops),
  • then knights, at the bottom peasants/serfs

  • Lords provided housing, farmland, protection
  • Serf worked the lords land, cared for animals,
    maintained the manor (they were not allowed to
    leave the manor)
