  • A verb is a word used to express an action, a
    condition, or a state of being.

Action Verbs
  • They tell what a subject does. The action it
    expresses can be either physical or mental.
  • King Kong climbs the Empire State.

Linking Verbs
  • This verb links its subject to a word in the
    predicate. It stands alone.
  • King Kong is a huge gorilla.

Helping Verbs and Verb Phrases
  • Helping verbs help main verbs express precise
    shades of meaning. Any linking verb becomes a
    helping verb the moment it combines with an
    action verb.
  • This combination is called verb phrase. A verb
    phrase can have one or more linking verbs.

  • Forms of BE be, am, is, are, was, were, been,
    being

to use verbs that are as specific as possible.
Notice the difference that a change to a more
precise verbs makes in the sentence below. The
