  • Dear Coaches,
  • The following is a presentation that
includes information that is required for me to
communicate and that I hope you could be used as
a resource for you and your programs. I hope I
dont come across as overly righteous or
    all-knowing because I am neither. I was a coach
and so I know the challenges that you go through
on a daily basis, not only during the season but
in the off-season as well. I am honored to be
the Athletic Director at such a fine school as
Venice and to associated with such a great group
of coaches. I really believe we have an
outstanding coaching staff at Venice and I am
proud to be a part of it.
  • Please let me know if there is anything I
can do to support you. I hope you enjoy the
    presentation.

PAPER WORK INSTRUCTIONS PLEASE USE EMAILED
SPREADSHEET THAT I HAVE SENT YOU!!!!   1.
Distribute the forms or instruct your players to
go to www.veniceathletics.org 2. Encourage the
players to get their physicals right away. 3. As
the players turn in the paperwork, simply look at
the forms to make sure that all signatures are
filled in. If they are missing one or more
signatures or pieces of information, return the
entire packet to the student and instruct the
student to bring it back the next day. 4. Turn
the physicals into the nurse as soon as you get
them. 5. Hang on to the emergency cards. 6. When
Vickie informs you (she likes emailing this
information) her clearance date, input that date
on the form. 7. Submit the all the paperwork and
the completed Coaches checkoff list. 8. Send me
a list of all probable members of your team as
soon as you have a good idea and I will check
their eligibility. I am hopeful this process
will not be too burdensome on you. Most of the
steps can be delegated to a sharp student or
manager while still making sure that all the
paperwork is properly filled out and accurate.
Please let me know if you have any questions or
concerns and I will be happy to help you.

25
  • LANGUAGE AND LANGUAGE OF ASSISTANTS
  • YOUR ASSISTANTS REFLECT YOUR PROGRAM ALMOST AS
    MUCH AS YOU DO.

26
IN THE OLD DAYS
  • CRITERIA (FOR BEING ALLOWED TO USE PROFANITY)
USED TO BE IF YOU WON
  • NOT THE OLD DAYS ANYMORE
  • EASY WAY IS.. _at_
  • THE CHALLENGE
  • SEE BUD WILKINSON/TONY DUNGY-great examples of
winning coaches who seldom if ever used
    profanity. IT CAN BE DONE.

27
GARFIELD FOOTBALL COACH EXAMPLE
  • During a halftime talk with his team, LITERALLY,
EVERY OTHER WORD FROM COACH'S MOUTH WAS
  • !_at_!'S"
  • Made coach, program, and school look bad.
Remember, just as your athletes represent you,
the program and the school, so do you.

28
  • Former Oklahoma football coach Bud Wilkenson
once said, the use of profanity shows two
things a limited vocabulary and a lack of
    imagination.

29
Watch your thoughts, for they become
words.Watch your words, for they become
actions.Watch your actions, for they become
habits.Watch your habits, for they become
character.Watch your character, for it becomes
your destiny. -UNKNOWN

SHOULD NOT BE ANY ATHLETES PRACTICING/PLAYING WHO
HAVE NOT BEEN CLEARED.  WE WILL RANDOMLY CHECK
PRACTICES TO INSURE THAT ONLY STUDENTS ARE
    PRACTICING AND PARTICIPATING

46
  •
  • NEGLIGENCE
  •

47
  • NEGLIGENCE IS THE MOST COMMON TORT SUIT FILED
    AGAINST COACHES

48
  • NEGLIGENCE
  • occurs when a coach fails to act as a reasonable
and prudent person would act in a similar
    situation

49
  • An important element in determining negligence is
failing to anticipate and eliminate unreasonable
risks of injuries that a reasonably prudent
person would have anticipated and eliminated.

50
  •
  • THIS HAD BEEN TERMED THE DOCTRINE OF
  • FORESEEABILITY

51
THREE GENERAL AREAS
  1. Sound planning
  2. Inherent risks (proper instruction) adequate
    supervision, matching and equating opponents,
    evaluating athletes' disabilities (proper
    supervision)
  3. Safe playing environment (proper maintenance),
    and emergency first-aid procedures

52
  • To determine negligence in the case of a coach,
four basic questions will be asked

53
  • Do you owe the players a duty?
  •
  •
  • Was the duty breached?
  •
  •
  • Was your breach of duty responsible for the
    player's injuries?
  •
  •
  • What is the extent of the actual injury or
    damage?
  •

54
  • For negligence to be established, all four of
these questions must be answered in the
    affirmative.
