Environment

Roles and Responsibilities
  • All school personnel are responsible for
    maintaining a safe and orderly learning
    environment. School personnel will review
    expectations for faculty and staff, review the
    safe school plan, and provide adequate
    supervision for students at all times.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Students, teachers and support staff are all
    responsible to act on situations when a threat
    has been made that would cause bodily harm or
    death to students or faculty members or when a
    threat of an action that would otherwise disrupt
    the educational process has been spoken, written
    or otherwise uttered.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Information will be provided to faculty,
    students, parents (guardians and care givers),
    and the community pertaining to student conduct
    and the Safe School Plan.
  • Students and parents must sign the conduct form
    to assure they have read and understand the
    policies.

  • Restores, if needed, and maintains a safe and
    orderly learning environment by establishing
    appropriate rules and procedures and monitoring
    of the physical and social/cultural environment.

    any identified problems.

  • Students who are late to school shall sign-in at
    the front desk. A Class Admit Slip will be issued
    by office staff showing the reason for the late
    arrival, students name, date, time, and whether
    the tardy is excused or unexcused.

  • Students who are tardy due to bus issues shall go
    directly to their class and an announcement will
    be made to admit these students as excused.

    person who has written permission on file in the
    principals office) may check out a student. A
    photo ID IS required.

  • Code Red will always be an emergency situation
    and requires a complete lockdown.
  • Take appropriate actions based upon the
    situations in which you find yourself.

  • Code Yellow procedures should be followed when it
    is in the best interest of the school to keep
    students, faculty, and staff away from common
    areas (lunchroom, gymnasium, media center,
    hallways, locker rooms, etc).

    from the principals office. If there is a
    particular area of concern the Code Yellow
    alert will be followed by an announcement of a
    particular area or situation. Example Code
    Yellow avoid the 8th grade hallway.

  • There will be no vague directions given, they
    will be specific.
  • Teachers, may I have your attention please? Code
    Yellow-Evacuate. Please avoid area given.
    Teachers, check your rooms for any suspicious
    items and note them on your white boards before
    leaving the classroom.

Code Yellow-Evacuate
  • If the evacuation is going to involve moving the
    students in such a way that normal evacuation
    procedures to vacate the building (Fire Escape
    Plan) then specific instructions will be given to
    those teachers.

  • In the event of a bomb threat the parking areas
    would need to be avoided for instance.
  • We would evacuate into the baseball field area
    with all students.
  • If the evacuation will be extended then
    transportation will be provided to a safe
    loaction.

  • Code Red (Lockdown) procedures should be
    followed when an armed person or intruder (s) is
    detected anywhere on campus or as a result of a
    hostage situation or abduction or as a result of
    civil disobedience or riot.

  • The person observing the intruder shall
    immediately notify the office and provide the
    following information about the intruder(s)
  • Last known location.
  • The number of intruders observed.
  • The presence of any weapons or suspicious
    devices.
  • A description of the intruder(s).

  • Faculty and staff shall clear all open spaces and
    take charge of any students in the immediate
    vicinity, even if not your students.
  • The office will announce a Code Red and give
    the intruders last known location. Example
    Code Red parking lot.

  • Classroom doors and windows shall be locked. Once
    a door is secured, the teacher shall not open the
    door for any reason as long as a Code Red is in
    effect.
  • Cover outside windows with shades or blinds or
    with paper if time permits

  • Support personnel who have students should go to
    a sheltered location, lock the doors, keep
    students away from doors and windows, and stay
    with the students until advised otherwise.
  • Support staff (clerical workers, custodians, food
    service employees, etc.) that do not supervise
    students should go to a per-assigned location and
    lock the doors.

  • Teachers in adjacent classrooms shall assist
    substitute teachers in securing and locking
    doors.
  • If anyone is injured or may require medical
    attention a Red Paper with the room number
    should be slid under the door and into the
    hallway. A second Red Paper should be used in
    the window in a manner that is visible from
    outside and prevents anyone from outside the
    classroom from seeing the location of students or
    teachers or staff members.

  • If no one is injured or is in need of medical
    attention, a Green Paper should be slid under
    the door and into the hallway. A second Green
    Paper should be used in such a manner that it
    can be seen from outside.
  • Each room where this procedure is not followed
    will be considered a possible threat area by law
    enforcement.

  • Teachers shall take roll immediately and report
    any missing students and their last known
    destination, i.e., restroom, office, etc. to a
    Safety Team Member.
  • Students are to be seated in a sheltered area of
    the room and away from doors and windows.
  • All students are to be kept in the classroom.

  • Any bells or alarms (unless it is apparent that
    there is a fire in the area) should be
    disregarded.
  • The principal or the administrator-in-charge
    shall notify Emergency Management and the Central
    Office.
  • Each room will be contacted individually by the
    principal or other administrators who will make a
    predetermined statement and wait for the
    appropriate response from the teacher. An
    inappropriate response will indicate that there
    is a problem. Question Is everything OK?
    Response Everything is OK.

Code Red
  • In an Evacuation is deemed necessary, it will
    be conducted under the direction of law
    enforcement. Law enforcement officers will
    announce themselves, use a key supplied by the
    school to gain access to the classroom, and
    escort individual classrooms out of the building
    one class at a time and ONLY when it is safe to
    do so.

Code Red
  • Procedures to follow if a Code Red occurs
    during assembly, lunch, between classes, during
    fire drills, etc.
  • Do not climb under tables or desks.
  • Run away from the danger area in a direction
    opposite from the intruder.
  • If a shooter is involved, instruct student to
    zigzag as much as possible.
  • Put an obstacle between the shooter and the
    students.
  • Do not be concerned about notifying the office.
    Someone in a safer are will make the report.
  • Keep students running until they are in a safe
    area away from the school.
  • Gather as many students as possible and take them
    to a predetermined, designated rally area so
    students can be accounted for.
  • Wait for instructions and do not allow students
    to leave.

Code Red
  • A Code Red will continue until an all clear
    message is given.
  • This message will sound something like, All
    Clear. Teachers (followed by specific
    instructions as to what to do).
  • Remain in your classrooms until
  • Resume normal activities
  • We will be evacuating by classrooms, please
    stand-by and officers will come to your room.

What are your responsibilities?
  • Teachers and teacher assistants are responsible
    for the safety and welfare of all students.
  • The teachers and assistants will
  • Keep Safe School flip charts close by to provide
    quick and easy access to procedures for
    themselves and substitutes.
  • Keep accurate and current information about the
    emergency plans for the school. (Know what to do
    and how to do it.)
  • In accordance with the schools Safe School Plan,
    provide instruction and practice for students in
    policies and procedures to follow during the
    course of an emergency.
  • Have readily available a record of each students
    emergency information (NC-WISE)
  • Make all emergency data and plans available for a
    substitute teacher.
  • Make reasonable and prudent decisions in regard
    to the safety and well being of students.
