NATIONAL FIRE PLAN

WILDFIRES 2000 DISASTER PROJECT U.S. DEPT. OF
LABOR (DOL) INDUSTRY NATIONAL EMERGENCY GRANT
- Employed people who were economically impacted
by the
fires of 2000, dislocated workers, or long-term
unemployed. - Goals were to improve the public watershed by
rehabilitating burned areas,
mitigate subsequent flood damage, and reduce
hazardous fuels.
Stewart Richter was one of the first DOL crew
members in the spring of 2001. As a result of
the training he received while employed by the
RCD, he was hired in the fall of 2001 by the
Darby Ranger Station as a Bitterroot Hot Shot
Firefighter. In 2002 Stewart was rehired on the
Bitterroot Hot Shot Crew. His experience,
training recommendations, and positive work
ethics have led him to be nominated to
participate in the Wildfire Fire Fighter Academy,
sponsored by the US Forest Service. This
nomination will allow Stewart to receive advanced
fire management training and move into a
permanent career position with the US Forest
Service. Stewart is just one of many success
stories of DOL crew members furthering their
employment opportunities.
The RCD DOL employment was a definite stepping
stone to my current career goals in fire
management with the US Forest Service, said
Stewart Richter pictured above.
