What is point of view?

• Point of view means Who is telling the story?
• Think about your favorite book. Who is telling
  the story? (The story is told from whose point
  of view?)

There are 2 kinds of point of view

• First person (I)
• Third person (He / she / it)

First Person - Subjective

• 1. major or minor character
• 2. reports events as if they had just happened
• 3. unaware of full meaning of events
• 4. reader knows more than narrator

First Person - Detached

• 1. major character
• 2. recalls events from vantage point of maturity

First Person - Observer

• 1. minor character
• 2. has role of eyewitness and confidante
• 3. sources of information are what he hears and
  sees and what main character tells him

Third person

• a) Limited point of view of only one
• person
• Can you think of a story where there is a 3rd
  person narrator but the audience only sees what
  that one character thinks and feels?

• b) Objective - reports only what characters
  do and say
• Can you think of a story where there is a 3rd
  person narrator but the audience only sees what
  the characters do and say (no look at feelings
  and thoughts)?

• c) Omniscient - knows what characters feel and
  think as well as what they do and say
• Can you think of a story where there is a 3rd
  person narrator and the audience can see what ALL
  characters do, say, think and feel?
