Mateo 1422 - 33
22 En aquel tiempo, inmediatamente después de
la multiplicación de los panes, Jesús hizo que
sus discípulos subieran a la barca y se
dirigieran a la otra orilla, mientras él despedía
a la gente.
23 Después de despedirla, subió al monte a
solas para orar. Llegada la noche, estaba Él
solo allí.
24 Entre tanto, la barca iba ya muy lejos de la
costa y las olas la sacudían, porque el viento
era contrario.

25 A la madrugada, Jesús fue hacia ellos,
caminando sobre el agua.
26 Los discípulos, al verlo andar sobre el
agua, se espantaron, y decían Es un
fantasma! Y daban gritos de terror.
27 Pero Jesús les dijo enseguida
Tranquilícense y no teman. Soy yo.
28 Entonces le dijo Pedro Señor, si eres
tú, mándame ir a ti caminando sobre el agua.
29 Jesús le contestó Ven. Pedro bajó de la
barca y comenzó a caminar sobre el agua hacia
Jesús

30 pero al sentir la fuerza del viento, le
entró miedo, comenzó a hundirse y gritó
Sálvame, Señor!
31 Inmediatamente Jesús le tendió la mano, lo
sostuvo y le dijo Hombre de poca fe, por
qué dudaste?
32 En cuanto subieron a la barca, el viento se
calmó.
33 Los que estaban en la barca se postraron ante
Jesús, diciendo Verdaderamente tú eres el
Hijo de Dios.

22 After he had fed the people, Jesus made
the disciples get into the boat and precede
him to the other side, while he dismissed the
crowds.
23 After doing so, he went up on the mountain
by himself to pray. When it was evening he was
there alone.
24 Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles
offshore, was being tossed about by the waves,
for the wind was against it.

25 During the fourth watch of the night, he
came toward them, walking on the sea.
26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea
they were terrified. It is a ghost, they
said, and they cried out in fear.
27 At once Jesus spoke to them, Take courage,
it is I do not be afraid.
28 Peter said to him in reply, Lord, if it
is you, command me to come to you on the water.
29 He said, Come. Peter got out of the boat
and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.

30 But when he saw how strong the wind was he
became frightened and, beginning to sink, he
cried out, Lord, save me!
31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and
caught him, and said to him, O you of
little faith, why did you doubt?
32 After they got into the boat, the wind died
down.
33 Those who were in the boat did him homage,
saying, Truly, you are the Son of God.

Today is the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
In the Gospel for today we see that Jesus was
showing the Apostles how he was ready and able
to help them in time of need. He can be found
even in the midst of storms at sea. The
implication is that he is God. They worship him
because they have come to believe that He is the
Lord. We want to learn from the reflections of
the early Church Fathers and their spiritual
interpretation.

Hoy es el domingo Decimonoveno del Tiempo
Ordinario. En el Evangelio de hoy vemos que
Jesús estaba enseñando a los Apóstoles que Él
podía y estaba listo para ayudarlos en tiempo
de necesidad. Se puede encontrar hasta en medio
de una tormenta en el mar. La implicación es
que es Dios. Lo adoran porque han llegado a
creer que Él es el Señor. Queremos aprender de
las reflexiones de los Padres de la Iglesia
temprana, y de su interpretación espiritual.

Note that he compels them to go on the boat into
the sea without him. Why did he do this? In
the Gospel of John 615 we find that after the
miracle of the multiplication of loaves and
fish, the crowd wished to come and force
Jesus to be their king. He knew they were still
thinking in terms of worldly power, in a worldly
kingdom. That is when Jesus withdrew by himself
into the mountain to pray. And that is when he
sent his disciples into the sea on boats. The
Lord wanted to be in union with his heavenly
Father.

Noten que los obliga a que se embarquen en la
barca al mar sin Él. Por qué hizo esto? En
el Evangelio de Juan 615 vemos que después del
milagro de la multiplicación del pan y
pescados, la gente quería forzar a Jesús que
fuera su Rey. Él sabia que todavía estaban
pensando en términos de poder terrenal, de un
reino de este mundo. Entonces fue cuando Jesús
se aparta solo a la montaña a rezar. Y entonces
fue cuando mando a sus discípulos al mar en la
barca. El Señor quería estar en unión con su
Padre celestial.

The Gospel of John 619 says they had already
rowed about three to four miles into the sea. It
was dark, so how did they see Jesus? Remember
that he had the people sit down on green grass.
So it must have been springtime. If so, that
is when the moon would be full. In ancient times
the night was divided into four watches 6 pm to
9 pm, 9 pm to midnight, midnight to 3 am, and
3 am to 6 am.

El Evangelio de San Juan 619 dice que ya habían
remado tres o cuatro millas en el mar. Estaba
oscuro. Cómo fue posible que ellos vieran a
Jesús? Recuerden que Jesús hizo a la gente
sentarse en el pasto. De manera que ha de haber
sido en tiempo de primavera. Si es así, ese es
el tiempo cuando la luna esta llena. En tiempos
antiguos la noche se dividía en cuatro velas
de 6 pm a 9 pm, de 9 pm a media noche, de
media noche hasta las 3 de la mañana, y de 3 de
la mañana hasta las 6 de la mañana.

The fourth watch was when Jesus came walking upon
the waters. He saw the boat fighting the winds
and the waves, and he came to help. He knew
the disciples needed him. They did not have to
ask. Remember that in those days they had no
radio or other means of communication.

La cuarta vela fue cuando Jesús vino andando
sobre las aguas. Él vio a la barca peleando los
vientos y las olas, y vino a ayudarles. Él
sabia que los discípulos lo necesitaban. Ellos
no tuvieron que pedir. Hay que recordar que en
aquellos días no había radio o otro medio de
comunicación.

When Jesus appeared walking on the waters, the
disciples were terrorized. I can just imagine
them shouting in fear It is a ghost! Jesus
calms them down, saying Have courage, it is
I, do not be afraid! (Matthew 1427). It is
so important to remember these words many times
in our lives. Jesus wants us to be courageous.
It takes courage to be a Christian. Christianity
is not for the timid, or for cowards. St. Paul
(2 Timothy 17) tells us The Spirit God has
given us is not of timidity, but of power and
love and control of self.

Cuando Jesús apareció andando sobre las aguas,
los discípulos estaban aterrorizados. Ya me
imagino oyéndolos gritando en miedo Es un
espanto! Jesús los calma diciendo Tengan
valor, soy yo, no tengan miedo! (Mateo
1427). Es tan importante recordar estas
palabras muchas veces en nuestras vidas. Jesús
quiere que seamos valientes. Toma valor para ser
un Cristiano. La Cristiandad no es para los
cobardes, o los tímidos. San Pablo (2 Timoteo
17) nos dice El Espíritu que Dios nos ha dado
no es de timidez, sino que de poder, y amor,
y control de sí mismo.

Next we see St. Peter acting on impulse, as he
always did. He acted from the heart, not from
the head. He always spoke his mind. He was
transparent. He said If it is you Lord, bid
me come to you on the water. Jesus could have
said no. But he said Come. As long as Peter
kept his eyes on Jesus, he was able to keep on
walking towards Jesus. But as soon as he took
his eyes off Jesus, and began to see how strong
the wind was, he became frightened and
beginning to sink, he cried out Lord, save
me! Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand
and caught Peter, and said O you of little
faith, why did you doubt?

Luego vemos que San Pedro actúa por el impulso,
como siempre. Él actuaba del corazón, no de la
mente. Siempre hablaba de lo que tenia en la
mente. Es transparente. Él dijo Si eres tu
Señor, mándame ir a ti caminando sobre el agua.
Jesús podría haber dicho que no. Pero le dijo
Ven. Y mientras San Pedro ponía sus ojos en
Jesús, podía andar sobre las aguas hacia Jesús.
Pero al momento que quito los ojos de Jesús, y
comenzó a ver que fuertes estaban los vientos,
se asusto, y comenzó a hundirse, y clamo
Señor, sálvame! Inmediatamente Jesús le
tendió la mano, lo sostuvo, y le dijo
Hombre de poca fe, por qué dudaste?

Jesus was teaching us all to trust in him, no
matter what. He is always there ready to help
us in time of need. I can sense him saying
Trust in me. You can do what you are called to
do. Be confident in yourself. Do not be
afraid. Do not doubt. In the Book of James
12-8 the Lord says Count it all joy, my
brothers, when you meet various trials, for you
know that the testing of your faith produces
steadfastness.

Jesús nos estaba enseñando a todos a confiar en
Él, pase lo que pase. Él siempre esta allí,
listo para ayudarnos en tiempo de necesidad. Ya
me lo imagino diciendo Confía en mi. Puedes
hacer lo que eres llamado a hacer. Ten confianza
en sí mismo. No tengas miedo. No dudes. En el
Libro de Santiago 12-8 el Señor dice Tengan
por sumo gozo, hermanos míos, cuando se hallen
en diversas pruebas (tentaciones), sabiendo que
la prueba de su fe produce paciencia
(perseverancia).

And let steadfastness have its full effect,
that you may be perfect and complete, lacking
nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him
ask God, who gives to all men generously and
without reproaching, and it will be given
him. But let him ask in faith, with no
doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of
the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
For that person must not suppose that a
double-minded man, unstable in all his ways,
will receive anything from the Lord.

y que la paciencia tenga su perfecto resultado,
para que sean perfectos y completos, sin que
nada les falte. Y si a alguno de ustedes le
falta sabiduría, que se la pida a Dios, quien
da a todos abundantemente y sin reproche, y
le será dada. Pero que pida con fe, sin dudar.
Porque el que duda es semejante a la ola del
mar, impulsada por el viento y echada de una
parte a otra. No piense, pues, ese hombre, que
recibirá cosa alguna del Señor, siendo hombre de
doble ánimo (que duda), inestable en todos sus
caminos.

St. Augustine (Sermon 75-4) has a beautiful
spiritual interpretation. He says the boat
carrying the disciples represents the church. It
is rocking and shaking amid the storms of
temptations, while the adverse wind rages on.
That is to say, its enemy the devil strives to
keep the wind from calming down. But greater is
He who is persistent on our behalf, for amid the
vicissitudes of life He gives us confidence.

San Agustín (Sermón 75-4) tiene una bella
interpretación espiritual. Él dice que la barca
llevando los discípulos representa a la iglesia.
Esta meciendo y sacudiendo en las tormentas de
tentaciones, mientras que el viento adversario
esta rabioso. Es como decir, el enemigo el
diablo trata de que el viento siga soplando
fuerte, sin calmarse. Pero más grande es Él
que persiste por nosotros, porque en medio de
las vicisitudes de la vida Él nos da confianza.

Jesus comes to us and strengthens us, so that
we are not pushed around in the boat and tossed
overboard. The boat carries the disciples and
receives Christ. Without it, there would be
certain death. Therefore stay on the boat and
call upon God.

Jesús viene a nosotros y nos fortalece, para
que no seamos empujados de la barca y echados
fuera. La barca lleva a los discípulos y
recibe a Cristo. Sin ella, hubiera cierta
muerte. Entonces, quédate en la barca y
llámale a Dios.

When all good advice fails, and the rudder is
useless, and the spread of the sails presents
more of a danger than an advantage, when all
human help and strength have been abandoned,
the only recourse left for the sailors is to cry
out to God. The Lord will help those who are
sailing to reach port safely He will never
abandon his church, or prevent it from arriving
in peace and tranquility So be it! Amen!

Cuando todo buen consejo falla, y el timón de
nada sirve, y el extender de las telas presenta
mas peligro que ventaja, cuando toda ayuda y
fortaleza humana han sido abandonadas, el único
recurso que queda para las navegantes es clamar a
Dios. Él Señor que ayuda a los navegantes a
llegar al puerto seguros, nunca abandona a su
iglesia, ni le quita de llegar en paz y en
tranquilidad al puerto. Así sea! Amen!
