12 En aquel tiempo, el Espíritu impulsó a Jesús
a retirarse al desierto,
13 donde permaneció cuarenta días y fue
tentado por Satanás. Vivió allí entre animales
salvajes, y los ángeles le servían.
14 Después de que arrestaron a Juan el Bautista,
Jesús se fue a Galilea para predicar el
Evangelio de Dios y decía

15 Se ha cumplido el tiempo y el Reino de
Dios ya está cerca. Conviértanse y crean en

12 The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert,
13 and he remained in the desert for forty
days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild
beasts, and the angels ministered to him.
14 After John had been arrested, Jesus came to
Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God

15 This is the time of fulfillment. The
kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and
believe in the gospel.

This is the First Sunday of Lent. Two years
ago Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI set the tone for
the Church to follow during Lent. I want to
start Lent with his reflection. Then we will
make some additional observations, that are
appropriate for today.

Este es el Primer Domingo de Cuaresma. Hace dos
años, el Papa Emeritus Benedicto XVI, le dio a
la Iglesia el tono para seguir durante la
Cuaresma. Quiero comenzar la Cuaresma con su
reflexión. Entonces haremos unas observaciones
por añadidura que son apropiadas para hoy.

The Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said Lent is a
journey it is to accompany Jesus who goes up to
Jerusalem, the place of the fulfillment of the
mystery of his passion, death and
resurrection it reminds us that the Christian
life is a journey to undertake, which
consists not so much in a law to be observed but
in the very person of Christ, who we must
encounter, receive and follow. Jesus, in
fact, says to us If any man would come after
me, let him deny himself and take up his cross
daily and follow me (Luke 923).

El Papa Emeritus Benedicto XVI, dijo La
cuaresma es una jornada es acompañar a Jesús
que va rumbo a Jerusalén, el lugar del
cumplimiento del misterio de su pasión, muerte y
resurrección nos recuerda que la vida
Cristiana es tomar una jornada que consiste no
tanto en una ley para ser observada sino que en
la mera persona de Cristo, quien tiene que
encontrar, recibir y seguir. Jesús, nos
dice Si alguno quiere seguirme, que se niegue
a sí mismo y levante su cruz diariamente y que
me siga (Lucas 923).

The Gospel for today tells us that Jesus prepared
for his public life by going into the desert to
pray for forty days and forty nights. Our
forty days of Lent are an effort to join him in
prayer in a similar fashion. By virtue of his
death and resurrection he is now accessible to
us as we walk the walk. We are not alone. He
walks with us, and inspires us by the Holy
Spirit to purify ourselves, to get ready to
celebrate his passion and death and
resurrection.

El Evangelio de hoy nos dice que Jesús se preparo
para su vida publica al irse al desierto a rezar
por cuarenta días y cuarenta noches. Nuestros
cuarenta días de Cuaresma son un esfuerzo para
unirnos a Él en la oración de la misma manera.
Por virtud de su muerte y resurrección Jesús
esta accesible para nosotros al caminar por su
camino. No estamos solos. Él camina con
nosotros, y nos inspira por el Espíritu Santo
para purificarnos, para estar listos para
celebrar su pasión y muerte y resurrección.

The Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI continues The
Lord tells us that to arrive with him to the
light and the joy of resurrection, to the
victory of life, of love, and of the good, we
must also take up our cross every day, as a
beautiful page of the Imitation of Christ
exhorts us take up your cross and follow
Jesus in this way you will go to eternal life.
He went before, carrying his cross, and died
for you on the cross so that you would carry your
cross and be willing to die on it. Because if
you die with him, you will also live with him.
And if you are his partner in sorrow, you will
also be so in triumph (L. 2, c. 12, n. 2).

Señor nos dice que para llegar con Él a la luz y
al gozo de la resurrección, a la Victoria de la
vida, de amor, y de lo bueno, hay que también
levantar nuestra cruz diariamente, como una
bella pagina de La Imitación de Cristo nos
exhorta Levanta tu cruz y sigue a Jesús de
esta manera entraras a la vida eterna. Él fue
adelante, cargando su cruz, y murió por ti en
la cruz para que tu cargaras tu cruz y quieras
morir en ella. Porque si mueres con Él, también
vivirás con Él. Y si eres su compañero en los
dolores, también serás lo mismo en la Victoria
(L. 2, c. 12, n. 2).

The Lord tells us Repent, and believe in the
Gospel. To repent means to have a change of
heart. It means we have a change in the way we
think, the way we act, the way we live our
lives. Why should we change anything? The
love of the Lord is what urges us on. That is
what the Lord expects of us if we love him.
Rend your hearts, and not your garments,
says the Lord. By this we understand that Gods
will is that we have a disciplined heart a
heart that is lean and strong.

El Señor nos dice Arrepiéntanse, y crean en el
Evangelio. Arrepentirse quiere decir tener un
cambio de corazón. Quiere decir cambiar la
manera de pensar, la manera de actuar, y la
manera de vivir nuestras vidas. Porque hemos de
cambiar algo? El amor de Dios es lo que nos
urge. Eso es lo que el Señor espera de nosotros
si lo amamos. Rompan sus corazones, y no sus
vestiduras dice el Señor. Por esto entendemos
que la voluntad de Dios es que tengamos un
corazón disciplinado un corazón que esta
delgado y fuerte.

On Ash Wednesday, we marked ourselves with the
imposition of ashes. The Lord said Return to
me with all your hearts (Joel 212). Once
again, unworthy though we are, the Lord calls
us unto himself. These are precious words in
the ears of a sinner. It means that once more
the Lord gives us a chance to experience his
embrace. He wants us to come to our senses. It
makes no sense to continue without him. It is
absurd to ignore him. If we do, it is at our
peril.

En el Miércoles de Ceniza, nos marcamos con la
imposición de ceniza. El Señor dijo Vuelvan a
me con todos sus corazones (Joel 212). Una
vez mas, indignos como somos, el Señor nos llama
a si mismo. Estas son palabras preciosas para
un pecador. Quiere decir que una vez más el
Señor nos da la oportunidad de experimentar su
abrazo. Él quiere que despertemos. No tiene
sentido continuar sin Él. Es absurdo ignorarlo.
Si lo ignoramos, nos perjudica.

This time runs the risk of being marked by
sadness, by the darkness of life. We are sad
because we know that we are not always faithful
to the Lord. We are sad because we have
offended God our heavenly father. We are sad
when we are away from the Lord. St. Augustine
said it right Our souls are restless, until
they rest in thee.

Estos tiempos corren el riesgo de ser marcados
con tristeza, y por la oscuridad de la vida.
Estamos tristes porque sabemos que no siempre
hemos sido fieles al Señor. Estamos tristes
porque hemos ofendido a nuestro Padre celestial.
Estamos tristes cuando estamos lejos del Señor.
Bien lo dijo San Agustín Nuestras almas están
sin descanso, hasta que descansemos en ti.

There are two kinds of sadness. One leads to
depression and despair. The other leads to
repentance. St. Ignatius said that
discouragement is always from the evil one. So
be alert, and dont give in to him. St.
Ignatius also says it is good to practice some
penance. But avoid that which makes you gloomy.
Dont overdo it.

Hay dos clases de tristeza. Una llega a estar
deprimido y a la desesperación. La otra clase
de tristeza llega al arrepentimiento. San
Ignacio dice que el desanimo siempre viene del
maligno. De manera que hay que estar alertos, no
te entregues a él. San Ignacio también dice que
es bueno practicar penitencia. Pero evita algo
que te hace tristón. Que no sea demasiado.

It seems to me that the best penance is to
fulfill your obligations to the best of your
ability. Be on time. Work, if you can find
work, for a living. Pay your debts. Pray the
holy Rosary. Visit the Lord in the Blessed
Sacrament. Read the Holy Bible. Share your
blessings with the poor.

Me parece que la mejor penitencia es cumplir con
tus obligaciones lo mejor que puedas. Hay que
estar a tiempo. Trabaja, si es que encuentres
trabajo. Paga tus deudas. Reza el Rosario.
Visita al Señor en el Santísimo Sacramento. Lee
la Santa Biblia. Comparte tus bienes con los
pobres.

St. Ignatius (Spiritual Exercises 63) suggests
that we turn to Our Lady and ask her to obtain
from her Son three things First, ask for a
deep knowledge of your sins, and a feeling of
repugnance for them. Second, ask Our Lady for
an understanding of the disorder of my sinful
actions. I want to be filled with horror of
them, so that I may amend my life and put it
in order. Third ask for the grace to put
away from me all that is worldly and vain.

San Ignacio (Ejercicios Espirituales 63)
sugiere que vuélvanos a Nuestra Señora y
pedirle que consiga de su Hijo tres cosas
Primero, pide un conocimiento profundo de tus
pecados, y un sentir de repugnancia de ellos.
Segundo, pide a la Virgen un entendimiento del
