Title: The Rock Cycle

1
The Rock Cycle
  • no vestige of a beginning no prospect of an
    end.
  • James Hutton, 1785

2
Igneous Rocks
  • Magma (melted rock) cools and crystallizes to
    form solid rock

3
Sedimentary Rocks
  • Parent rocks undergo weathering
  • Weathering produces loose material
  • Loose material is Eroded (transported)
  • Sediment (transported material) is modified by
    sorting and rounding
  • Sediment is deposited in layers
  • Layers of additional sediment bury sediments
  • Ions dissolved in groundwater form crystals that
glue the sediment grains together (Cementation)

4
Metamorphic Rocks
  • Heat and Pressure during mountain building act on
    existing rock to cause
  • Foliation
  • Recrystallization
  • Formation of new minerals

5
Concept Maps
  • Visual representations of information, processes,
    relationships, etc.
  • Help students organize information
  • CMap Tools and other freeware
