  of Italy. Unfortunately it was built at the base
  of a dormant volcano. In A.D. 79 the volcano
  woke up

• The explosion of the volcano covered the town of
  Pompeii in ash and rock. It remained covered for
  about 1700 years. When it was rediscovered,
  historians found a lot of material culture (
  buildings, tools, and other objects that shape
  how people live).
