Coordinating Conjunctions
  • These only join ONE similar word or word group.

Examples Coordinating Conjunctions
  1. Theo or Tyler (two nouns)
  2. quickly but carefully (two adverbs)
  3. Through a forest and across a river (two
    prepositional phrases)
  4. Cocker spaniels make good pets, but they require
    a lot of grooming. (two clauses)

Correlative Conjunctions
  • These join PAIRS of words or word groups that are
    used in the same way.

  • both not only
  • and but also
  • either or
  • or whether
  • neither nor

Examples Correlative conjunctions
  1. Both horses and cattle were brought to North
    America by the Spanish. (correlative conjunction
    joining two nouns.)
  2. The student council will meet not only on Tuesday
    but also on Thursday. (two prepositional phrases)
  3. I dont know whether to walk or to ride my bike
    to the grocery store. (two infinitive phrases)

  • Coordinating joining ONE
  • Correlative joining TWO
  • HINT (O comes before R in the alphabet, so
    this may help you remember which joins one)

Coordinating or Correlative?
  1. She didnt stay up too late, NOR did she watch
    too much television.
  2. The sun had risen, YET it was still too foggy to
    drive.
  3. They took vacations NOT ONLY in July, BUT ALSO in
    December.
  4. Arguments soon broke out, FOR the players had not
    agreed upon the rules beforehand.
  5. She will NEITHER take a cab NOR ride the bus.
  6. The team couldnt decide WHETHER to practice more
    OR take a break.

Practice Find the conjunctions and label them as
either coordinating or correlative
  1. Both the team captain and the coach thought that
    the competition went well.
  2. We will see either the new French film or the
    popular German film.
  3. The baby cried, so her mother comforted her.
  4. Terri picked the basketball, and Nikki picked the
    football.
  5. I wanted to see the previews, but the movie had
    already started.
  6. Rocco didnt think the joke was funny, yet he
    pretended to laugh.
  7. Unique species of both plants and animals exist
    in rain forests.
  8. Both eagles and monkeys live in rain forests, too.
