Title: Observing Respiration

1
Observing Respiration
2
Introduction
  • All living things undergo respiration. As part
of this process animals take in oxygen and
release carbon dioxide by breathing. Plants do
not breathe as animals do so respiration in
plants is not as easily observable.
  • In this experiment you will observe the release
of carbon dioxide by humans and perform an
experiment to determine if Carbon dioxide is
    released by insects.

3
Problem
  • How can the release of carbon dioxide in humans
    be observed?
  • Do insects release carbon dioxide during
    respiration?

4
Pre-lab discussion
  • What is an indicator?
  • What indicator are we using for this lab?
  • What happens when Carbon dioxide combines with
    water?
  • Write the formula for respiration.
  • What safety note should you observe when blowing
    through the straw?

5
Hypothesis
  • I think.

6
Procedure
  • These will be verbal instructions for part A and
    Part B of the lab
  • Do not start or do anything until told to do so

7
Data
Test tube Initial Next day
insects and indicator
Indicator alone
8
Analysis and Conclusion
  1. Did the color of the indicator change when you
    exhaled into the beaker? Why?
  2. Did the color of the indicator change in the test
    tube with the insects? Explain
  3. Compare the reaction that occurred in the test
tube with the insects with the reaction in the
    flask that you exhaled into.
  4. Did respiration occur in this experiment?
    Explain.

9
Conclusion
  • Write a two sentence conclusion.
  • The data supports/does not support my hypothesis.
    The data shows..
