1
Spaceand Beyond!
  • S6E1. Students will explore current scientific
views of the universe and how those views
    evolved.
  • a. Relate the Nature of Science to the
progression of basic historical scientific models
(geocentric, heliocentric) as they describe our
solar system, and the Big Bang as it describes
    the formation of the universe.
  • b. Describe the position of the solar system in
the Milky Way galaxy and the universe

2
Solar Eclipses
  • Occurs during the New Moon
  • The moon is almost exactly between the Earth and
the Sun, blocking the sunlight from the Earth.

3
Lunar Eclipses
  • Full Moon
  • The Earth is almost directly between the Sun and
the Moon, causing the earth to block sunlight
    from reaching the moon.

4
Theories
  • Heliocentric
  • Geocentric
  • Our star (Sun), the planets, many moons, and
other small bodies that ALL travel around the Sun.
  • The idea that the planets and moons revolve
    around the Earth.

5
Types of Galaxies
  • Galaxies are classified by their shape.
  • Developed by Edwin Hubble
  • 3 Types of Galaxies
  • A. Spiral
  • B. Elliptical
  • C. Irregular

6
What is a Galaxy?
  • Galaxy A giant structure that contains hundreds
of billions of stars bound together by gravity.
  • Spiral Galaxy A galaxy whose arms curve outward
in a pinwheel pattern. Contains solar systems and
nebulae (gas, new stars, and dust).
  • Irregular Galaxy A galaxy that does not have a
regular shape. They do not fit in another class.
  • Elliptical Galaxy A galaxy shaped like a
flattened ball, containing only old stars, with
bright centers and very little dust/gas

Types of Galaxies
Spiral Galaxy Our galaxy, The Milky Way, is a
spiral galaxy
