Title: How Tornadoes Form
1How Tornadoes Form
By Megan Mitchinson
2Tornadoes form inside thunderstorms. Dark,
often greenish sky large hail wall cloud a
loud roar, similar to a freight train. Some
tornadoes appear as a visible funnel extending
only partially to the ground.
3Before thunderstorms develop, a change in wind
direction and an increase in wind speed with
increasing height creates an invisible,
horizontal spinning effect in the lower
atmosphere.
Hot air from the ground rises
4This change can generate a horizontal spin in the
lower atmosphere. Down drafts bring the rotation
to the surface.
5Updrafts can tilt the rotating column of air from
horizontal to vertical causing it to spin
faster.
