The Close of the War

• Five days after the surrender of General Robert
  E. Lee to General Ulysses S. Grant.
• Lincoln attended a play at Fords Theater, called
  Our American Cousin.
• Originally invited Grant and his wife but
  Lincolns wife and Grants wife didnt get along.
• Major Rathbone and his fiancé attended instead.

The Plot

• Originally they were going to kidnap the
  President.
• Changed to assassination once they discovered
  that Lincoln supported voting rights for African
  Americans.

The Plot Thickens

• Goals
• Kill President Lincoln John Wilkes Booth
• Kill General Grant John Wilkes Booth
• Kill Vice President Andrew Johnson George
  Atzerodt
• Kill Secretary of State William Seward Lewis
  Powell

Lincoln and Grant

• Original Plan was to shoot Lincoln and stab
  Grant.
• Grant didnt attend so Booth shot Lincoln and
  tried to escape.

Vice President Johnson

• George Atzerodt was assigned to kill Vice
  President Johnson.
• Atzerodt was nervous about the attempt and chose
  not to attempt an assassination.

Secretary of State Seward

• Lewis Powell came to Sewards house with a gun
  and a knife.
• Seward had been injured in an accident and was
  recovering.
• Powell forced his way in but the gun misfired, so
  he attempted to stab him.
• Since the room was dark and several people
  defended Seward, Powell wounded but did not kill
  Seward.

The Escape

• Booth and other conspirators make it out of
  Washington and to a doctor to splint his broken
  leg.
• They continue south until they make it to
  Virginia.
• Hiding in a barn or warehouse they were
  surrounded and the barn started on fire.
• As Booth left the barn he is shot in the neck and
  paralyzed. He dies two hours later.

The Consequence

• Many people are arrested, even if they had
  nothing to do with the assassination. Eventually
  a smaller list was used to punish those involved.
