WORKING SAFELY
  • Its obvious that safe behavior in the lab is
    essential to protect you and those around you
    from possible HAZARDS!

THE RULES
  • By following the science lab safety rules you can
    minimize the RISK for you and your classmates

INSTRUCTIONS
  • Carefully reading all instructions prior to
    beginning a lab is important
  • Any instructions given by your teacher are also
    very important
  • So make sure to listen carefully

WEARING PROTECTION
  • Wearing the right gear in the lab is one way of
    reducing risk

EYE PROTECTION
  • Eye protection must be worn AT ALL TIMES during
    the lab
  • You can only take them off when you have cleaned
    up and all your equipment has been put away

GLOVES and COATS
  • You will also be required to wear a lab coat and
    protective gloves if working with harsh chemicals

NO FOOD OR DRINK
  • This rule applies on ALL Lab days

CAUTION AROUND FLAMES
  • Hair must be tied back
  • No loose fitting clothing
  • STOP, DROP and ROLL
  • Know where the fire extinguishers are!!!

THE GENERAL RULES
  • Work under supervision
  • Obtain teacher approval before beginning
  • Know where are safety equipment is located
  • Clean up all spills immediately
  • Wash your hands before you leave (seriously)
  • If theres an accident tell me right away
  • Never use broken or chipped glassware
  • Know hazards safety precautions for chemicals
    in the lab
  • Read all labels carefully
  • NEVER taste, touch or smell any chemical
  • Never return a chemical to its original
    container. This contamination
  • Dont wash any chemicals down the sink unless
    told to do so
  • Never leave a Bunsen burner unattended

what kind of hazard the product is.

  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • WHMIS sets standards for safety labels on
    chemical containers and ensures that an
    information sheet is available for every chemical
    that is used at a workplace.
  • WHMIS symbols are similar to the hazardous
    product symbols mentioned in the last slide but
    are always in a CIRCLE
  • They identify a wider range of hazards than
    household symbols do
