Hebrew Poetry in the Book of Psalms ?????????
  • Rhyme and rhythm are hard to translate. Hebrew
poetry is parallelism. The balance of thought
    supersedes the balance of sounds.
  • The 1st line is the theme followed by thoughts.
Three types of parallelism 1. Synonymous
parallelism repeats the thought of the first
    line.

13
Hebrew Poetry in the Book of Psalms ?????????
  • 2. Antithetical parallelism emphasizes the
thought of the first line by contrasting it with
    the opposite.
  • 3. Synthetic parallelism uses the 2nd line to
fill in or complete the thought of the first.
  • A few parallelisms are casual, justifying the
first. Sometimes parallelism involves 3 or more
    lines.

Applications of the Book of Psalms ?????
  • New Testament apostles often used Psalms to teach
Christian doctrines, such as the forgiveness of
sins, the faithfulness of God, the sins of
humanity, the inclusion of gentiles in the
church, the existence of angels, and Christian
    conduct.

Applications of the Book of Psalms ?????
  • Throughout the centuries, Psalms have been a
source of inspiration and spiritual strength. The
Psalms release us from frustration, pain, and
anguish. Psalm writers express the yearnings of
our deepest thoughts. By song and Spirit they
comfort the lonely, strengthen the weary, bind
the brokenhearted, and turn the eyes of the
    downcast to the Creator.

16
Applications of the Book of Psalms ?????
  • Psalms help us see how to praise God and pray to
Him. The inner life and emotions are shared
freely with God. For each emotion expressed by
the worshipper, Psalms point to an attribute of
God. He is an anchor when we are buffeted, a
comfort when we feel abandoned, and encouragement
    when support is needed.

17
Applications of the Book of Psalms ?????
  • The Psalms also have a rich history of liturgical
and congregational use. King David organized
choirs and orchestras, and appointed skilled
conductors and composers to lead the worship. He
not only composed many psalms, but also invented
musical instruments. 55 psalms are addressed to
    the Chief Musician.

Applications of the Book of Psalms ?????
  • This orchestrated worship was continued in
Solomons temple. With the destruction of the
second temple in AD70, the singing of psalms took
place in synagogue worship services. The early
Christian churches were mainly Jewish people.
They incorporated the singing of psalms, hymns,
and spiritual songs into their worship. Now the
churches have clapping, lifting up hands, bowing,
    standing, shouting, and dancing.

Truths and Actions in Book5 of Psalms ???5??????
  • Truth 2. Steps to Holiness. Holiness involves
trusting the Lord and not the world, most often
requiring that we make a choice for the former
and against the latter. The line between the two
is drawn finer and closer to the Lord the longer
    we walk with Him.
  • Action 2. 1152-8 Do not put your trust in things
you have built for security. Know that God calls
    this idolatry.
  • 119105,130 Seek illumination from Gods eternal
Word and not from mans finite wisdom.
  • 11936 Set your affections on doing Gods word
    rather than on personal gain.
  • 1271-2 Know that employing your skills for the
Lord is futile without His presence and anointing
    upon them.

Truths and Actions in Book5 of Psalms ???5??????
  • Truth 3. Steps to Dynamic Devotion. God wants our
hearts, not just our verbal allegiance, and He
desires that our affections be wholly His.
Developing the disciplined practices that lead to
this kind of life must be a high priority. This
requires that we reorder our priorities
    accordingly.
  • Action 3. 13923 Daily ask the Lord to search and
    know your heart.
  • 1312 Give yourself to secluded times of quiet
and stillness as a regular part of your devotion
    to God.
  • 11923-24 Regularly meditate on the Scriptures in
    order to plumb their depths.

Truths and Actions in Book5 of Psalms ???5??????
  • Truth 4. Key to Wise Living. Only the life lived
in the light of Gods Word is lived wisely. For
this reason, our study of the Bible must be
constantly accompanied with the petition that God
will give us wisdom and understanding through our
study so that we can learn to live in a way that
    pleases Him.
  • Action 4. 14310 Ask the Lord to teach you and
lead you in the performing of His will.
  • 119128 Take your stand on the rightness of Gods
Word. Understand that evil is that which
    disregards Gods instruction.
  • 11927 Seek knowledge but, most of all, gain
    understanding. Know that practical understanding
is more important than mere knowledge.
  • 11918 Daily ask God to open your heart and guide
through the ministry of the Holy Spirit to the
    message of the Scriptures.

  • Praise the Lord!... The Lord is high above all
nations. And his glory above the heavens. Psalm
    1131-9
  • This psalm begins and ends with the Hebrew word,
Hallelujah! It is a command to the congregation
of God to praise Him. The transcendent nature of
worship and praise are introduced with the fact
of Gods greatness and position above all else.
In other words, by the spirit of praise and
worship we may be ushered into the very presence
of the Lord. Thus the psalmist sounds forth the
    imperative Hallelujah!

  • Sing praises to His name, for it is pleasant.
    Psalm 1351-4
  • One of the greatest joys for any believer is to
discover the pleasure of a life filled with
praise. The disturbing affairs of daily living
often become the instruments by which the
Adversary attempts to wear down the saints. Once
the truth of praise and its power grip the soul,
the resisting efforts of ones flesh and the
world must give way to the beauty of praise and
worship. Hear and heed the advice of David when
he says, Oh, taste and see that the Lord is
    good. (348)

  • Praise the Lord, O my soul!... Psalm 1461-10
  • Throughout the Psalms praise is seen as an
activity which incorporates the entire being. The
admonition of the psalmist necessitates an
understanding of the soul, if our soul is to be
instructed to praise the Lord. Briefly, the soul
is best understood as referring to the mind,
emotions, and will. Paul refers to the whole
person when he discusses the spirit, soul, and
body in I Thess. 523. It is this totalitythe
spirit, mind, emotions, will, and bodythat the
psalmist has in mind when he cries, Praise the
    Lord, O my soul!

  • Praise God in His sanctuary Praise Him in His
    mighty firmament. Psalm 1501-6
  • In this concluding psalm we find animated praise
of the highest order. Nothing is left out in this
final admonition to praise the Lord. One lesson
it teaches is the thrill that comes to the one
who understands the partnership in praise between
heaven and earth. The joining together of mankind
with the hosts of heaven is almost more than can
be conceived. When we grasp it, however, we
discover the ecstasy of realizing that we are not
alone. If heavenly hosts exist to join with us in
praise, then they also exist to join with us in
    spiritual warfare and triumph! Hallelujah!
