Duke reverses decision on Muslim call to prayer

Duke University announced on Thursday that it has
reversed its decision to allow a Muslim call to
prayer to sound from a campus chapel bell tower.
According to school officials, plans changed
because the Durham, North Carolina, school's
effort to unify was not having the intended
effect. Officials went on to say, Duke
remains committed to fostering an inclusive,
tolerant and welcoming campus for all of its
students. The Duke Muslim Students Association
had planned to chant the call, or adhan, from the
Duke Chapel bell tower. The adhan signals the
beginning of the weekly prayer service. Jummah
prayers have apparently taken place in the
basement of Duke Chapel for many years. About 700
of Duke's 15,000 undergraduate and graduate
students identify as Muslim.

just over 12 of them are women. The U.S. is
currently home to the highest number of self-made
female billionaires. The wealthiest woman in the
world is Christy Walton. As the widow of John
Walton, son of Walmart founder Sam Walton,
Christy Walton inherited a portion of the retail
fortune following her husband's death in 2005.
She has an estimated worth of 37.9 billion.
  • Oklahoma performed an execution last night using
a relatively new controversial concoction for the
lethal injection. The injection consists of a
    three-drug combination of midazolam, vecuronium
bromide and potassium chloride. Midazolam, a
benzodiazepine that is still not FDA approved, is
supposed to render the prisoner unconscious.
Vecuronium bromide is a paralytic, which is meant
to paralyze all muscle movement and stop
respiration. Potassium chloride's role is to
activate nerves and induce cardiac arrest. The
controversy surrounds the use of midazolam, which
has been involved in some executions that were
    viewed as problematic by some.
  • Six people, including five foreigners, face
execution by firing squad in coming days in
Indonesia, as the country's new president upholds
a hard line on drug offenders. The executions
were announced Thursday by Indonesia's attorney
general, who said in a statement that
preparations for the executions were almost
    complete.
  • Best known as the rugged cowboy who starred in
    the Marlboro Man cigarette advertisements,
Darrell Winfield died Monday at home in Wyoming
at age 85. His cause of death was not listed in
his obituary. Often called the most successful
tobacco advertising campaign ever, the Marlboro
Man appealed to American men because of his
    masculinity, individuality and freedom.
