• The French (France) had encouraged a revolution
  in the New England colonies.
• Now they had their own revolution.
• King Louis XVI was executed.
• A new leader comes to power Napoleon
• Napoleonic Wars begin (1793- 1815)
• The War of 1812 was the North American Phase of
  the War.

• Liberty! Equality Fraternity!!
• French revolutionist abolished monarchy in
  France. Marie Antoinette and Louis had their
  heads chopped off by a guillotine.

• General Napoleon seized power and launched France
  on a European war of conquest.
• The French Revolution led to the Napoleonic wars
  of 1793-1815

American Opportunity

• Britain was caught up in the Napoleonic war. They
  fought against Napoleons armies on the continent
  of Europe. Americans saw this as yet another
  opportunity to invade Upper Lower Canada while
  Britain was preoccupied with war in Europe.

Give me a Reason!

• During Napoleonic war Britain placed France under
  a naval blockade- preventing trade with the
  United States.
• British navy boarded U.S. ships around
  France-forced British citizens into military
  services. They also fired upon U.S. ships and
  arrested an American citizen by mistake.

• June 18, 1812 United Sates declares war on
  Great Britain made immediate plans for the
  conquest of the Canada's

America Attacks the Canadas

• Both sides launch attacks into each others
  territory, including York (now Toronto) and the
  Americans White House.
• More than 2000 African Americans gain freedom by
  fighting on the British side many move to
  Ontario.

• Laura Secord takes a long walk to warn of an
  attack. The Americans are Coming!!
