  • The War of 1812 was the North American Phase of
    the War.

  • French revolutionist abolished monarchy in
    France. Marie Antoinette and Louis had their
    heads chopped off by a guillotine.

  • General Napoleon seized power and launched France
    on a European war of conquest.
  • The French Revolution led to the Napoleonic wars
    of 1793-1815

American Opportunity
  • Britain was caught up in the Napoleonic war. They
    fought against Napoleons armies on the continent
    of Europe. Americans saw this as yet another
    opportunity to invade Upper Lower Canada while
    Britain was preoccupied with war in Europe.

  • During Napoleonic war Britain placed France under
    a naval blockade- preventing trade with the
    United States.
  • British navy boarded U.S. ships around
    France-forced British citizens into military
    services. They also fired upon U.S. ships and
    arrested an American citizen by mistake.

    territory, including York (now Toronto) and the
    Americans White House.
  • More than 2000 African Americans gain freedom by
    fighting on the British side many move to
    Ontario.
