The Facts, Please!

• Moses dead stick was a shepherds walking
  staff. When he was 40 years old, Moses went out
  into the desert and became a sheepherder. That
  is where he first used his staff.

The Facts, Please!

• In Bible times, a shepherds staff was from three
  to six feet long, usually with a crook at one
  end. This helped the shepherd climb hills or
  walk across the rough countryside. He used it to
  beat the bushes or brush when a sheep strayed
  into it. This helped him find the sheep and
  scare away any snakes or other reptiles that
  happened to be there.

The Facts, Please!

• The shepherds rod was used to count the sheep.
  At night, when the sheep were brought into the
  sheepfold or herded together, they passed under
  the rod, one by one, and were counted. It was
  used to mark the sheep. The end of a rod was
  dipped in dye, and every tenth sheep that passed
  under the rod was marked as a tithe and was later
  given to God in the temple.
