Title: Gas Production Lab

1
Gas Production Lab
  • We have already seen a few of the signs or
evidence of a chemical change. The Magic Color
lab showed us permanent color change and the
Curds and Whey lab showed us two liquids can form
    a solid.

2
Remember the signs of gas production?
  • Bubbling
  • Foaming
  • Fizzing
  • Or sometimes a smell is produced.

3
Safety First
  • You will need to wear your goggles. You also
need to be very aware of where your body is. DO
NOT PLACE YOUR FACE OVER THE FILM CANSITER OR
    POINT IT AT ANYONE!

4
Journaling
  • Title Gas production
  • Guiding Question What evidence do you see to
    support a chemical change?
  • Chart

I notice. I wonder.

5
Step 1
  • Examine your supplies and write a description of
each in the I notice column.
  • Alka seltzer Tablet (Citric Acid C6H8O7 and
Sodium Bicarbonate or baking soda 3NaHCO3 )
  • Water (H2O)
  • Film Canister

6
The Film Canister
  • During this lab you will need to place some water
in the canister, drop in ¼ of an alkaseltzer
table, then you need to close the canister
securely and place it lid side down. YOU MUST
    CLOSE IT SECURELY!

7
Step 2
  • Make a before drawing of the materials.
  • Break the tablet into 4ths.
  • Fill the canister ½ full with water.
  • Drop ¼ of a tablet into the canister and seal it
    tightly.
  • Turn it lid side down on the table and get out of
    the way.
  • Record you observations in the journal and draw a
picture of the canister before and after.

8
Whats going on in there?
  • Fill the canister again ½ full of water.
  • Place ¼ of the alka seltzer tablet into the water
but dont put the lid on.
  • Record your observation in your I notice column.
  • Make a drawing to show what is happening inside
    the canister.

9
Step 3
  • You can use the remaining 2 tablet pieces to take
    your experiment a step further.
  • Write down what you plan to do with them in the I
wonder column and then do it.
  • Be sure to record your observations in your
chart, but draw a line to separate the original
observations from this set of observations.

10
Clean Up
  • Pour all the liquid down the drain and wipe up
any liquid that is on the table.
  • Rinse out the canister and return it to the
    bucket.

11
What happened?
  • The water (H2O) reacts with the Citric Acid
C6H8O7 and Sodium Bicarbonate or baking soda
    3NaHCO3 ) forming a gas.

12
Conclusion
  • Write a sentence describing the evidence you saw
that proves what occurred was a chemical change.

13
One step farther.
  • Look back at the materials. What do you think
gas do you think was released during this lab?
  • Write a sentence to explain what gas you think it
    was.
