Title: Solving Inequalities
1Solving Inequalities
Have you ever experienced this situation? Youre
at an amusement park. Youre heart is pounding
because you finally made up your mind to ride the
new roller coaster that just opened up. You go
to get in line and you notice a sign that reads
YOU MUST BE TALLER THAN 54 INCHES TO RIDE THIS
RIDE. Luckily youve grown recently, and you are
able to ride the ride. Well, if h represent your
height, then hgt54 represents the height you must
be to ride the ride. This sentence is called an
inequality.(Not equal to) Inequalities are
sentences that compare quantities.

3Solving Inequalities
Special rule for inequalities WHEN MULTIPLYING
OR DIVIDING BY A NEGATIVE, THE INEQUALITY SIGN
FLIPS.
For example -2x ? 6 You are dividing both sides
by a negative 2, so the inequality sign will flip
to ?, so your answer would be x ? -3.
4Solving Inequalities
x -5? 18
x ? 23
5Solving Inequalities
-5x ? 25
x ? -5
6Solving and Graphing Inequalities
After finding your solution to the inequality,
you can graph your answer on a number line.
7Solving Inequalities
Find the number that matches your answer and draw
a circle on the number line..
8Solving and Graphing Inequalities
After you determine whether or not your circle
should be open or colored in, you need to
determine which way to draw the arrow.
Read what the inequality sign is saying, or if
the variable is on the left side of the
inequality sign, draw the arrow in the direction
the sign is pointing.
