  • D. December 5, 1889
  • President of the Confederate States of America
  • Began as a senator from Mississippi
  • Ran for Governor, but was defeated
  • Retired from political life briefly, in 1852
  • Pres. Pierce asked him to be Sec. of War in 1853
  • He accepted

  • 1857-- Went back to the Senate position of Miss.
  • 1859 he was considered one of the elite people in
    America!!!
  • In 1860, when the chaos began, he was mentioned
    for Pres. Of the CSA
  • He refused the nomination
  • Actually sought a remedy to secession
  • He at first did not want to secede
  • Mississippi seceded on January 9, 1861
  • He felt that his state was justified
  • Proclaimed no ill-will towards Northern Senators

  • Miss. elected him to lead their armed forces, a

1st Battle of Bull Run
  • Forward to Richmond!
  • On to Washington!
  • 1st major battle of the civil war Also called
    Battle of Manassas
  • July 21, 1861 at Manassas Junction, VA
  • 20 miles South of Wash D.C.
  • Stream called Bull Run
  • 30,000 Union soldiers engaged the Confederates
  • Union army swept back the Confederates
  • Victory seemed sure. BUT

  • The Confederates counter-attacked and drove the
    Union soldiers back
  • The Union army retreated
  • Washington D.C. panicked!!!
  • Richmond, VA cheered
  • Both sides felt that Wash. D.C. would fall in
    hours
  • BUT. The inexperienced Southern troops failed to
    follow up their victory
  • The South won the first battle
  • Casualties were light
  • Battle effected on morale

  • Southern confidence soared
  • Felt they could defeat the North
  • Felt they did not need to fight a defensive war
  • North realized they were in for a long war
  • Not going to be easy to defeat the South
  • This is when Lincoln implemented his Anaconda
    Plan
  • Starve the South into submission
