  • Add style to your writing!

What is an appositive?
  • A noun or noun phrase that renames or identifies
    another noun right beside it. It does not
    describe a noun.
  • It can be a short combination or a long
    combination of words.
  • The appositive adds information and style to your
    sentence.

What does it do for my writing?
  • Helps eliminate repetition words like he, she,
    it, is ,was.
  • Adds information
  • Combines short sentences

Examples
  • Good The bug, a cockroach, is crawling across
    the desk.
  • Better The bug, an ugly cockroach, is crawling
    across the desk.
  • Best The bug, an ugly cockroach with hairy
    legs, is crawling across the desk.

Appositives in Action
  • They are always in the middle of a sentence or at
    the end of a sentence-never at the beginning.
  • They are called interrupters because you can
    remove them without disrupting the sentence.
    (although it is boring!!)
  • After the call, the umpire was charged by Robbie,
    a hot tempered baseball player.
  • Zoey, the cutest dog ever, barks at strangers.

Helpful Appositive Hints
  • An appositive never begins with who or which.
  • Not an appositive Mrs. Smith, who won the
    lottery, bought a new car.
  • If you use only a first name, there is no
    comma.
  • My sister Jane left for college.

  • Abercrombie is located in the mall. It is a
    popular store among teens.
  • Abercrombie, a popular store among teens, is
    located in the mall.
  • The cat attacked my left ankle. It was an evil
    creature with rabies.

    my left ankle.
