Title: Writing

1
Writing
  • Article

2
What is an article?
  • A piece of writing intended for publication in a
    newspaper or magazine
  • It is important to attract the readers
    attention
  • It can include amusing stories, reported speech
    or description
  • It can be formal or informal depending on the
    readers
  • You can give opinions, thoughts as well as facts.
  • It should be interesting

3
What is the content of the article?
  • It can describe an experience, an event, an
    person or a place
  • It can present an opinion
  • It can compare and contrast various things
  • It can provides information
  • It can offer a suggestion or advice

4
Title and organization
  • Title should be eye-catching and attracts
    readers attention
  • TOWARDS A SLIMMER SOCIETY
  • Organization
  • 1. Introduction
  • 2. Main body
  • 3. Conclusion

5
Ad 1) Introduction
  • Define the topic and keep the readersattention
  • OFCOM, the organization that regulates the media
in the UK, has announced its decision to ban the
advertising of foods high in fat, salt and sugar
from childrens television in an effort to reduce
    child obesity.
  • Do not present your opinion yet

6
Ad 2) Main body
  • Write 2-5 paragraphs
  • 1 paragraph 1 idea / point
  • Now you can give your opinion
  • Advertising is at least partly to blame. But
should it be blame?Advertisers dont think
so.They cite freedom of speech. But I think
freedom of speech may be restricted in the public
    interest.
  • Support your opinion with arguments and examples
    from everyday life
  • Clearly, there is a problem. We see more and
    more overweight, unhealthy looking children
around us. You can look at the nearest hamburger
place on a Saturday and see how many families are
    having lunch there.

7
Ad 3) Conclusion
  • Summarize the topic
  • Return to the topic from the introduction
  • Suggest solutions
  • Refer to the future
  • Other steps can be taken to reduce child
obesity. In supermarkets sweet should not be
offered at a childs eye level. Schools should
offer healthier food. And perhaps most
    importantly, children should have more
    opportunities to do sports.
  • But this advertising ban is a sensible move,
which other countries might consider imitating.
Lets hope it helps us bring up slimmer,
    healthier future generations.
