Introduction
  • For many years robots have excited peoples
imaginations whether in books, films or
amusement parks. However it is only recently
robots have left the realms of fiction. Even now
thousands of robots are at work around the world
but are any of them actually intelligent?
  • Definitions
  • Artificial Intelligence the branch of computer
science aiming to produce machines which can
    imitate intelligent human behavior.
  • Computer an electronic device that processes
data according to a set of instructions.
  • Robot a machine programmed to perform specific
    tasks in a human manner.

3
Robots in Fiction
  • Robots have always been creatures of the
imagination and in that respect have existed long
    before we even had computers.
  • Our perception of robots doesnt seem to be based
on our historical attempts to build robots, but
instead the numerous books and movies featuring
    humanoid machines.

4
Robots in the Real World
  • Meanwhile the robot we have on earth differ
slightly from the intelligent androids we
    anticipated.
  • Ninety percent of all robots work in factories
and are nothing more than than a robotic arm
controlled by a computer and attached to a
    stationary base,

Robot Employment
  • Robots have and will continue to replace millions
of jobs in industry. Most of the products we buy
today have been at some stage manufactured by
computer operated machines. Naturally robots do
unpleasant and dangerous tasks so humans no
    longer have to.

6
A Robot's Abilities
  • There are currently many limits dictating what a
robot can and cannot do. At the moment engineers
are still grappling with problems like making a
robot move, see and hear but whos going to
    make a robot think?
  • Computers can follow instructions, but will they
ever be able to make their own decisions?
