Title: Asexual Reproduction in Bacteria
1Asexual Reproduction in Bacteria
- Asexual reproduction- reproduction from 1
parent. - Binary Fission - asexual reproduction in
bacteria. - It is similar to mitosis, but the process is
different. Bacteria have circular chromosomes.
Bacteria cells can divide more quickly than
eukaryotic cells because they do not have
cytoskeleton or membrane bound organelles
2Asexual Reproduction in Eukaryotic Organisms
Some eukaryotic organisms can reproduce asexually
through mitiosis. For example, some plants can
reproduce both sexually (through pollination of
an egg to form a seed) and asexually (runners,
bulbs, cuttings) All seedless oranges come
from the asexual propagation of a the cuttings of
a mutant tree.
3Advantages and Disadvantages of Asexual
Reproduction
- Asexual reproduction can be more efficient in a
stable environment. - However, a sexual reproduction is a disadvantage
in a changing environment. - - Variation is one of the prerequisites for
natural selection.
4Cell Differentiation
Cell differentiation is the process by which
unspecialized cells develop into their mature
form and function.
5Class Totipotent Pluripotent Multipotent
Type of cell Fertilized egg Embryonic stem cell Adult stem cell (examples from blood)
Can give rise to All cells in the body Almost any type of cell in the body Closely related cells
Example New organism Neurons, skin, muscle, kidney, cartilage Red blood cells, platelets, white blood cells
6Cancer
- Cancer is caused by uncontrolled cell division
in which cells dont respond to normal cell cycle
controls, such as contact inhibition.
7Cancer Terms
- Benign
- Harmless
- Malignant
- Cancerous
- Metastasis
- Spread of cancer in the body
- (Verb form- metastasize)
