Title: The Research Paper
1The Research Paper
2First of all
- Modern Language Association (MLA) deals with the
study and instruction of language and literature. - Citation is vital to avoiding plagiarism!
- If everyone created works cited in their own
unique wayit would be mass confusion! - Therefore, MLA (and other styles) are useful in
formatting works cited and in-text citations in
one, uniform and professional manner.
3Other styles
- MLA style is the style used for acknowledging
sources used in literary and humanities courses.
- APA style is used in the Science courses
(Biology, Chemistry, Psychology) - Chicago Style is used in History courses.
4Citing Sources within your text
- In MLA style, references to sources are placed
within the text to briefly identify them for a
reader. - This is also done to enable a reader to quickly
reference the authors works cited for that
particular source. - In-text citations are parenthetical references.
Always use ().
5In-Text cont
- Always place the in-text citation as close as
possible to the material being documented (could
also go where a pause would naturally occur, but
most likely will occur at the end of a sentence). - In-text citations usually only include the
authors last name and page reference. - Do not repeat information that occurs within the
sentence in the in-text citation.
6More in-text stuff
- For example, if you state the name of the author
in the sentence, you do not need to restate
his/her name in your in-text citation. - Crutcher has expressed concern over the book
banning (231-33). (notice punctuation comes
after the parenthetical information) - For examples of in-text citations, click the

7Next Order of business--Creating a Works Cited
- Each type of source has its own
particular/correct way to be documented. - For example, a book in a volume would be
documented differently than an article in a
newspaper. - A works cited page is double spaced between each
citation and lines within a citation. - Each citation is should be in hanging indent
format. - A works cited page is going to be your reports
very last page. - A works cited page gets a page all to itself.
