What is the authors purpose?

Carter tossed and turned. It had finally
happened. His basketball team, the Hoopsters, and
his soccer team, the Sting, had games scheduled
for the same time on the same day. Carter could
not sleep as he struggled over what to do. He
thought his parents would tell him what to do,
but they just said, This is a decision you have
to make. You knew this could happen. His
basketball coach said, You do not want to let
down your teammates, do you? However, that was
just the problem. He had two sets of teammates,
and he did not want to let either one down.
You have got to choose soccer, his best
friend Bobby told him, but Carter knew that was
because Bobby was on the soccer team. What was
he going to do? How could he make everyone happy?

What is the authors purpose?
Most people think daddy longlegs are spiders.
They look alike, but they are not the same. Look
closely next time you see daddy longlegs. They
have only one body section, but spiders have two.
When they walk, daddy longlegs use their second
pair of legs to feel their way along. This is the
way some insects use their antennae. Spiders do
not have antennae. Some spiders have poisonous
bites. Daddy longlegs cannot bite. To protect
themselves, they give off a bad smell.
