1The Olympic games
- The First Olympics were held in 776 BC in
Olympia, Greece. At first, they were held only in
Greece but in 19th century, they began to take
place in other countries, too.
2INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE OLYMPICS
- The gold medals in The Olympics are not made of
real gold. The last time the winners got pure
gold medals was a 100 years ago, in 1912.
3- Usain Bolt ran the 100 meters for less than ten
seconds. He beat Marian Woronins record from
1984. which was ten seconds flat.
4American swimmer Michael Phelps has the most
Olympic medals -22! 18 gold, 2 silver and 2
bronze between 2004 - 2012.
5London 2012. was the first Olympics where every
country had at least 1 female athlete. Also,
Female Boxing was included which meant that every
sport in the games had male and female
competitors.
6Ukrainian gymnast Larisa Latinjina won the most
Olympic medals. She won 18 medals between
1956-1964.
7The 110 metre hurdles have been an Olympic
discipline since 1896. From 1926 on, women have
only run the 80 metre hurdles which was increased
to 100 metres starting in 1961.
8The shot put competition for men has been a part
of the modern Olympics since 1896 and women's
competition began in 1948.
9Serbia at London 2012. Olympics
- The Olympic Committee of Serbia sent a total of
115 athletes to the Games, 79 men and 46 women,
to compete in 15 sports. Volleyball, men's
handball, men's water polo were the only
team-based sports in which Serbia had its
representation in these Olympic games. Among the
sports played by the athletes, Serbia marked its
Olympic debut in taekwondo.
10- Novak Djokovic was the Serbian flag bearer at the
opening ceremony of the Games.
11- Milica Mandic won the gold medal in taekwondo in
2012 Olympics in London. She won against An
Karolin Graf from France.
12- Pistol shooter and Olympic gold medalist Jasna
Å ekaric, the oldest of the team at age 47, became
the first Serbian athlete to compete in seven
Olympic games.
13- The men's national water polo team managed to
repeat its bronze medal from Beijing.
