Lets Quickly Review Ionic and Covalent Bonding!
12
Ionic vs. Covalent
Ionic Covalent
Non-metal and a metal Lewis symbols are drawn and electrons are transferred from one element to another so that both elements become stable. Electron push diagram is used Name the first element and then use the periodic table of ions to determine the ending of the second element. All polyatomic elements are ionic. Use the polyatomic table to help you with these names. Polyatomics will contain more than two elements. Two non-metals Electrons are shared between two non-metals so that each element has a stable octect. Lewis symbols are drawn for each element and then the lone elements go looking for a mate. Structural diagrams Naming Prefix element name Prefix element name ide

Covalent Prefixes we only use these for
COVALENT BONDING!!!!!
Number Prefix
1 Mono
2 Di
3 Tri
4 Tetra
5 Penta
6 Hexa
7 Hepta
8 Octa

WATCH OUT!
Remember we are on the look out for the HOBrFINCl
SP family and these special compounds too! The
HOBrFINCl SP family will have chemical names of
atmospheric hydrogen etc. and these compounds are
named as listed on the left!
  • H20 Water
  • NH3 ammonia
  • NH4 ammonium
  • CH4 methane
  • PH3 phosphine
  • AsH2 arsine
  • N2H4 hydrazine
