1You will read a story about Ian. Lets see what
happens to Ian when he calls his friends names
and uses unkind teasing.
Ian liked to play kick and catch with his friends
at recess time. But, when they missed the ball he
would call them unkind names. He would say
something like You idiot. How could you miss
that ball? That was an easy catch!
2In class, if someone didnt know an answer, Ian
might say That was so easy! I cant believe you
didnt know that answer!
3One day, Ian made fun of Sarahs new book bag.
He said, That book bag is for babies! Why did
you ever pick such an ugly book bag? What Ian
said hurt Sarahs feelings.
4As you can guess, Ians classmates got mad at Ian
for using mean teasing and for calling them
names. Jackie even told Ian that she didnt
like being called names. But, Ian said, Im
just teasing. Dont get so mad. But, Jackie
was mad! One day she said to Ian, I wont play
with you anymore because you are too mean.
5Ians classmates refused to play with him. They
also didnt want to work with him on class
projects. Ian became sad because he didnt have
any friends. So he went to see his school
counselor.
6He told Mrs. Lutz that he didnt have any
friends. Ian finally admitted that he had been
calling his classmates unkind names and using
unfriendly teasing. Mrs. Lutz explained to Ian
that other students do not like to be called
names or teased unkindly because it hurts their
feelings. She said that other students do not
like to be around people who use unkind teasing
and name calling.
7Im sorry I called you names and teased you in
an unkind way. I wont do it again!
Mrs. Lutz and Ian talked about ways to be nice to
his classmates. Ian learned to say things such
as I like your shirt. You did great on the
math paper. You are a good kicker. Ian
also decided to apologize to his classmates for
the unkind things he had said to them.
8As Ian was nicer to the boys and girls, they
became friendlier to Ian. Now he was much
happier because he had friends!
