6Trades and Apprenticeships
- Occupations such as skilled construction work are
considered trades or crafts. - The completion of an apprenticeship is generally
associated with skilled labor. Training lasts 1 -
4 years, and provide on-the-job training. These
kinds of programs can lead to well paying jobs.

9What does college mean?
- There are 3 types of colleges someone with a high
school diploma can attend - Technical College (certificate, diploma or
Associates degree) - 2 year college (Associates degree)
- 4 year college/university (Bachelors degree)
10What are Technical Colleges looking for?
- High School Diploma or GED
- Take the SAT, ACT, or COMPASS Test
- Will be used for course placement minimum
admissions requirements - Apply after graduation from high school
- The HOPE Grant can be used for trade focused
certificate and diploma programs - No GPA
requirement - Chattahoochee Tech Gwinnett Tech Athens Tech
11What are two-year colleges looking for?
- High School Diploma
- At least a 2.0 GPA in core/academic coursework
(does not guarantee admission). Georgia
Highlands requires a 2.2 core GPA. - Complete 4 Math units through at least Adv Alg.
- Some two year colleges may accept a limited
number of students without Foreign Language from
high school, but to transfer to a 4 year college
will need to take 1-2 classes in the 2 year
college. - SAT, ACT or COMPASS
- Georgia Perimeter, Georgia Highlands
12What are four-year colleges looking for?
- High School Diploma
- 4 Math units, including a course beyond Adv Alg
such as Pre-Calculus, Statistics, or Adv Math Dec
Making, though more selective colleges will be
looking for higher math (UGA, GA Tech) - At least two years of the same Foreign Language
- California, South Carolina, Mississippi, and
Tennessee schools require additional units such
as Fine Arts or Computing, but this may be
flexible, CHECK WITH COLLEGE! (this isnt an
exhaustive list, but examples) - GPA (core) of at least 2.5, average around 3.5
- GCSU, GSU, GA Southern, Auburn, Alabama, SC, KSU,
etc. - SAT / ACT (Kennesaw State University)
- Minimum combined SAT CRM 950
- Minimum Composite ACT 20
13What are selective four-year colleges looking for?
- Stronger GPA (average 3.8 for UGA Tech) and
test scores (average CR M 1270 for UGA, 1300
for Tech) - Rigor of courses taken (average 5-6 AP, mostly
honors) - At least two or more years of same Foreign
Language (Some SC colleges require three years),
prefer 3-5 years of same foreign language to show
depth of knowledge - Math through at least Pre-Calculus or Accel. Math
III - Involvement, leadership, initiative, character
traits, community service - Essays to show writing skill and insight into
your personality - Letters of Recommendations from counselor
teachers - UGA, GA Tech, UNC, Clemson, Emory, Duke, Furman,
Ivy League
14HS Graduation vs. Admission Requirements
- HS Graduation (minimum)
- Determined by GA Department of Ed
- Tracked by you, your teachers, and your school
counselor - Are needed before you earn a diploma you
graduate if you earn the minimum - Include the GHSWT and 23 required credits
- Admissions (above beyond)
- Determined by the individual college
- Tracked by you it is your responsibility to
find out what the school wants - Are needed before you can be accepted you may
not be accepted with just the minimum - Include SAT/ACT or COMPASS

Most colleges will accept either test. These

17When should I take the SAT/ACT?
- During/after taking Advanced Algebra, or the
equivalent - Some students in advanced math courses will take
it in spring of Sophomore or fall of Junior year - Spring of your junior year, at the latest
- TAKE BOTH to decide which test is right for you
- ALL colleges will take both the SAT and ACT
- Seniors may take it again in the fall of senior
year, but may not be much time prior to
application deadlines, so PLAN AHEAD!

- COMPASS Placement exam required for entrance to
two year and technical colleges take at the
college - ASVAB Military Aptitude/career exam that
determines your eligibility for military jobs.
Also good, even if you arent interested in
military! - SAT Subject Tests Required by some highly
competitive colleges (Check with individual
colleges). Show the subjects in which you are
particularly strong.

- Make a list of potential schools
- Compare your profile to the schools freshman
profile - Review each schools application
- Complete the online application (preferred)
- Essays
- Resume information
- Pay the application fee

- Send your transcript
- Send your SAT/ACT scores (from test agency)
- Request Recommendations (if needed)
- Counselor Recommendation (or school evaluation)

- Studies show students who are involved in their
school and community have better grades and get
into better colleges - Volunteer community service
- Join a club
- Youth groups
- Summer/part-time jobs or internships
- Fine arts and athletic activities
- White service graduation cord for
students who log 120 hours. - 100 must be Pope Hours and 20 can be from outside
activities - Service hour paperwork can be obtained in PPO
with Mrs. Sabo! -
- A few activities that you passionately pursue is
preferred over several for which you are just a
casual member.
23Georgias HOPE Scholarship Program
- Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
- resident of Georgia one year prior graduate from
GA High School - HOPE Scholarship Qualifications
- Covers a large percentage of tuition for GA
public 2- or 4-year colleges - 3.0 High School CORE HOPE GPA
- To keep, student must maintain a 3.0 in college
- Can regain HOPE 1 time only
- Zell Miller Scholarship Qualifications
- Covers full-tuition for GA public 2- or 4-year
colleges - 3.7 high school CORE HOPE GPA
- SAT CR M 1200 or ACT 26 Composite on one test
sitting - To keep full scholarship, student must maintain a
3.3 in college. - Drop to regular HOPE as long as 3.0 is maintained
- Can regain Zell 1 time only
- Valedictorian and Salutatorian automatically
receive Zell
24What is the HOPE/Zell Miller Grant?
- The HOPE Grant is available to students who
attend a Technical College in Georgia to pursue a
diploma or certificate (not a degree) - There is NO GPA requirement for the first 30
hours. After 30 hours, you must maintain a 2.0. - The HOPE Grant pays a large portion of tuition
- Zell Miller Grant pays 100 tuition if students
earn a 3.5 GPA after the first term (retroactive
back-payment of tuition)

- It IS NOT listed on your transcript
- It is based on all your CORE course grades only
- Honors coursework is NOT weighted
- AP courses receive .5 extra quality points up to
4.0 - Middle school credit is not included

counselor minutes to discuss your senior schedule
to meet graduation requirements and to also

appointment time, have parent email if they need
